U-Pick Fields Lure Strawberry Lovers to Riverview

While the Beatles may extol the eternal virtues of strawberries in their legendary song, "Strawberry Fields Forever," those living in Florida know better. Florida strawberries are available for a seemingly fleeting period of time each year. Then, like the rest of the country, Floridians are relegated to eating strawberries grown in California. Patch visits the Florida Strawberry Festival, where seniors can save money on Thursday.

The 76th Annual Florida Strawberry Festival has a full slate of entertainment, games, rides, attractions and vendors. And on Thursday, seniors can enjoy all of it at a discounted price. The festival is known for its strawberries, and you can enjoy them in a milkshake, as part of strawberry shortcake, or just as they are. There’s plenty of other food, too, from deep-fried Oreos to a pork chop on a stick to chocolate-covered bacon (seriously). But in addition to eating, you’ll have the opportunity to visit a number of special exhibits featuring livestock, photography, art and plants. For the second year, The Original Leena's Chocolates in Bloomingdale ushered in the strawberry season, inviting the Strawberry Festival queen to dip the season's first strawberries in chocolate this week. Natalie Burgin, 2010 Strawberry Festival queen, was on hand at Leena's Monday afternoon to help dip freshly picked strawberries from Brandon Farms in what has become a tradition for the chocolatier. An admitted chocoholic, Leena Caligiure, the mother of three children, fell into chocolate making while living in New York.
