Put Armed Guards in Elementary Schools, Consultant Tells School Board

Safe Havens International tells the Hillsborough County School Board that it should place armed security in all elementary schools.

A consultant hired to review school safety is advising the Hillsborough County School Board to put armed officers in every elementary school. The Tampa Bay Times is reporting that Michael Dorn of Safe Havens International (see Safe Havens' video with this article) was hired in January to review school safety policies and come up with a list of improvements. The decision to bring in Safe Havens followed the Sandy Hook school shootings in Connecticut. Safe Havens' plan for Hillsborough schools is to place trained, armed security guards in every elementary school. The firm said that the officers need to be screen and supervised as well. Superintendent Wants Armed Security At All Hillsborough County Schools

Superintendent MaryEllen Elia has a plan that calls for a review by a security expert, and an additional 130 armed personel at Hillsborough schools. The extra staff would cost $4.1 million.

After continuing the law enforcement presence at Hillsborough County schools when students returned from winter break, school officials announced a long-term plan on Wednesday to continue enhanced security measures in the wake of last month's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. During a press conference at the Raymond O. Shelton School Administrative Center in downtown Tampa before PTA officials and local principals, schools Superintendent MaryEllen Elia discussed a "multi-faceted proposal" that will be brought to the school board at the next meeting on Jan. 15. Outstanding. We have armed security in banks to protect our money. Armed security at malls, clubs, parks etc. Why would we not have trained and armed security to help protect our most precious possession, our children. I have no children in school, but will be more than willing to pay my share of the cost.   more ›
