Food Truck 'Revolution' Hits Winthrop

Generation Food Truck was on hand at the Winthrop Pole Barn in Riverview, where Candy Gomez talked about her family's business to promote food trucks and food-truck festivals and events.

  Her husband a former member of a rock band, Candy Gomez now spends her time with him on the road, in a truck, promoting food trucks at events and festivals throughout the Tampa Bay area, including at the Winthrop Pole Barn in Riveriview last night, April 26. There, as part of a Yelp festival, Gomez talked about her family's Not Your Ordinary Food Truck and their subsequent launch seven months ago of Generation Food Truck, a promotion, booking, festival coordinating and consulting business for food-truck operators. The aim is to impress upon the masses that "The Food Revolution Is Here" while working with area businesses, charities and non-profit organizations to stage marketing and fundraising events, festivals and promotions. Nam Knights Westside Raises Funds for Haley House Fund

Representatives from the Haley House Fund talk about their cause and give thanks for the annual Nam Knights Westside Chapter charity pig roast fundraiser, held this year at Winthrop in Riverview on April 6.

  For seven of the nine years the Haley House Fund has been in existence the Nam Knight Westside Chapter has held an annual pig roast fundraiser at Winthrop to raise funds for the fund's mission. "It's gone quite well," said Vietnam veteran Dave Braun, a former honrary mayor of Brandon, who heralded the Haley House Fund formation years ago at a Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce Event. "We're all proud of doing what we're doing and for who we're doing it for, which are our most injured soldiers, at the James Haley Veterans Hospital. Our focus is on the families and friends of these soldiers, we put them up." Pig Roast Benefit at Winthrop Today

The seventh annual Nam Knights Westside Chapter charity pig roast aims to benefit the Haley House Fund and some law enforcement charities.

  Members of the Nam Knights Westside Chapter were up early this morning, April 6, to prepare for the club's wildly popular annual fundriaser at Winthrop in Riverview, where pigs are roasted and dollars are raised to benefit the Haley House Fund and some law enforcement charities. The event runs from noon to 5 p.m., with food served until 4 p.m. The event features as well live music, beer and vendors. The fundraiser is at the Winthorp Pole Parn off Bloomingdale Avenue, between Watson and Providence roads. The cost to attend is $15. There was a $5 discount for tickets purchased in advance. Winthrop Check Aids HCC Fire Academy Students

Money raised at the 2013 Winthrop Arts Festival turns into a books scholarship donation for firefighter students at the Ybor campus of Hillsborough Community College. Receiving the check at the Beaux Arts Gallery was Brandon campus president Carlos Soto.

      Fire Academy students at Hillsborough Community College students looking to get a break on book expenses have the 2013 Winthrop Arts Festival to thank, with proceeds from the event earmarked to help with their expenses. A check for $2,000 was presented to Carlos Soto, president of the Brandon campus of Hillsborough Community College, who received the funds on behalf of the college's fire academy. Also on hand was Hillsborough County Fire Rescure spokesperson Ronnie Rivera, who said the money earmarked for book scholarships will help upcoming firefighters with much-needed funds to complete their education. Winthrop Town Founder Talks About Construction Under Way

Construction continues at the neotraditional town at the corner of Bloomingdale Avenue and Providence Road, founded by John and Kay Sullivan of Valrico.

  What's going on at Winthrop? The construction in view now on Bloomingdale Avenue, between Watson and Providence roads, is for the upcoming Egg & I breakfast eatery and for another restaurant yet to be named. But this is just a sampling of the commerce that will line the Bloomingdale Avenue border of the neotraditional community founded by John and Kay Sullivan. The area is west of the Winthrop Events Centre — which features the Barn Theatre at Winthrop and the Winthrop Pole Barn — and east of Regions Bank. Wish List for Winthrop as Construction Heats Up

Motorists traveling Bloomingdale Avenue between Watson and Providence roads can't help but notice the construction under way west of the Winthrop Events Centre and just east of Regions Bank. What's coming, and what would you like to see open?

  What's going on at Winthrop? Ground is breaking on the tract of land that is designated for retail in the neotraditional community founded by Valrico residents John and Kay Sullivan. It's the area west of the Winthrop Events Centre — which features the Barn Theatre at Winthrop and the Winthrop Pole Barn — and just east of Regions Bank. It's already been reported that The Egg & I will open to serve breakfast and lunch at the Winthrop Town Centre. Also, a full-service Italian restaurant is sought for the area, according to the report. What restaurant would you like to see there? Rep. Ross Spano To Meet With Constituents Tonight at Winthrop

A ribbon-cutting and open house is scheduled for Jan. 31 at the Riverview office for state Rep. Ross Spano. The newly elected Republican politician is filling the District 59 seat vacated by Rachel Burgin.

  Elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2012, Ross Spano is getting set for his first legislative season, but not before greeting constituents tonight, Jan. 31, at his district office in Winthrop. There, at 11256 Winthrop Main St., Spano will be on hand for a 6 p.m. ribbon-cutting — and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. open house — in the space vacated by Rachel Burgin, who previously filled the seat that represents "the vast majority of Riverview to Brandon to Valrico, and out west to Clair Mel," according to Spano's legislative aide, Jonathan Rees. Remembering the Fallen at Winthrop Today

Close to 3,000 men, women and children are expected at the Winthrop community today, Aug. 26, at an event run by the Tampa Area Marine Parents Association.

  More than three times the number of people who showed up for last year's Run for the Fallen presented by the Tampa Area Marine Parents Association were expected to pay tribute at Winthrop to the men and women who have lost their lives in service to their country. The annual event, now in its fifth year, is scheduled to start with registration 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 26. This year's event for the first time included a Saturday night candlelight vigil and a weeklong memorial to fallen heroes. "It's good to be able to here, to be a part of this," said Marine Brandon Smith, 25, following the Saturday night vigil.
