Chabad of Brandon Hosts Completion Ceremony for Torah

The Chabad dedicated the Torah in memory of a young rabbinical student.

It was a sight that turned more than a few heads in the Bloomingdale area. On Sunday, a group of rabbis danced through the streets, taking turns carrying a newly completed Torah in a celebratory parade that ended at at 3005 Waylon Ln., Valrico, the home of the new Torah. The ceremony was the culmination of a 18-month campaign to raise funds for and then commission the new Chabad of Brandon Torah. Formed in 2004, Chabad of Brandon had been using a loaned Torah for its Saturday services. However, 18 months ago, members began raising the $35,000 for a Torah of their own, explained Chabad of Brandon member Raymond Pinto, who was instrumental is helping to get donations for the new Torah. Chabad of Brandon Raises Funds for Torah

The Torah is being purchased in honor of a young rabbinical student who died last.

In the Jewish faith, it's traditional to bring something good from tragedy, said Rabbi Mendel Rubashkin. With that in mind, Chabad of Brandon has launched a fundraising campaign to purchase its own Torah in honor of a young rabbinical student who was killed in an accident last May. The cousin of the rabbi's wife, Tzippy, Nosson Deitch, 21, and fellow rabbinical students from Miami were visiting Chabad of Brandon for the Jewish Lag B'omer celebration and barbecue last May. "They just came for the weekend and Nosson made a big impression on everyone," said Rubashkin. "He was so full of life." But that life was cut short when he and his fellow students decided to go jet skiing that Sunday, Deitch was killed instantly when his jet ski collided…
