The three day Project Cure walk will take place Oct. 26-28.
I’ll confess, when it comes to breast cancer, my journalistic objectivity flies right out the window. I’ve lost four dear friends to this horrendous disease, and watched as others suffered the ill effects of radiation, chemotherapy and surgery. So I’m always more than willing to share the stories of the brave women who battle breast cancer as well as the friends and families who work tirelessly to raise funds for research. One of those stories revolves around a group of mothers whose children attended St. Stephen Catholic School in Riverview. Six years ago, after two mother in one class died of breast cancer, Lisa Huetteman, Amy Meany, Mary Owens, Ivette Wagner and Jean Weber (OK, I’ll admit I was involved as well) decided to do more than…

Sister Carina Okeke is a member of the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy Congregation.
An admitted city girl, Sister Carina Maris Okeke is finding her new abode in rural Lithia a bit disconcerting. “It’s too quiet,” she said of the convent house donated by a parishioner at St. Stephen Catholic Church. “I was born and raised in the city. This is my first time in the countryside.” However, she concedes the serenity of the new convent house she shares with her sister in the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy Congregation, Sister Regina Maraizu, is ideal for her religious community’s tradition of prayer and contemplation. “Our life is very contemplative,” said Okeke of her religious community, which originated in her homeland of Nigeria. However, her life is about to get a lot more noisy. The new principal of St. Stephen Catholic…

News Report Small but mighty, that’s the best way to put it. Middle school students from St. Stephen Catholic School, a school of just over 300 students, competed against 1,800 children from public, private and magnet schools in the Hillsborough County Regional Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics Fair, and walked home with many of the fair’s top awards. During the competition held in February, the school’s entrants "wowed" the judges with three students winning Best of Show in their respective categories. They are slated to compete in the Florida STEM Fair in April. St. Stephen’s principal, Therese Jackson, believes that “our emphasis on critical thinking empowered our students to produce such excellent work. The students…
