Santa and the Mrs. Make Way to Bloomingdale for Saturday Visit

Bloomingdale East residents Joe and Pam Liguori represent the spirit of Christmas in the community.

Around this time each year, a decidedly festive transformation takes place in Pam and Joe Liguori's Bloomingdale East home. Like the homes of many Christmas lovers, every room in the Liguori house is decked out with an array of holiday decorations, including Pam Liguori's collection of snowmen, angels and Santa Claus figures. But the most dramatic change is in the couple themselves. Pam Liguori pulls her granny gown, mop cap and shawl out of storage while Joe airs out his white beard and Santa suit just in time to usher in the holidays as Bloomingdale's perennial Santa and Mrs. Claus. It's a cherished role the couple have now played for 26 years for the Bloomingdale Homeowners Association. And over the past two decades they've expanded …

Huff will lead the local not-for-profit group of more than 45 volunteers that offer tangible assistance to those in need on a person-to-person basis. From a Storefront Church to a Flourishing Parish, St. Stephen Celebrates 25 Years

The year-long celebration will kick off Wednesday, Aug. 22, with a special anniversary Mass followed by a dessert social.

Aug. 22 marks 25 years since a group of faithful Catholics assembled in a storefront at the Village Center on Bell Shoals Road to celebrate the first Mass of St. Stephen Catholic Church. Founding parishioner Rockie Woods recalls the church's humble beginnings. “It wasn’t much to look at,” Woods recalled. “We had metal folding chairs with a portable altar.” Each time the parishioners stood, there was a cacophony of noise as the chairs scooted across the bare concrete floor. But to those who had worked so hard to establish a parish in the growing area south of Bloomingdale Avenue, that first Mass was a thing of beauty. “We’d waited so long,” said Rockie. “Everyone was in awe that we were finally having a Mass. Everything was new and exciting…

Crowds Turn Out for Tastes During Rajun Cajun Cookoff

The event, held April 21 at the St. Stephen Spring Jubilee, benefited the church's maintenance director who was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor.

A short walk from the Ferris wheel, Scrambler and Big Bear rides at the St. Stephen Spring Jubilee Saturday, spicy aromas filled the air as St. Stephen Catholic Church parishioners cooked up Cajun concoctions in honor of a friend. A last-minute addition to the 11th annual Spring Jubilee, the Rajun Cajun Cookoff was organized by St. Stephen Men's Club secretary Tom Gross to raise funds for Patrick Albert, the church's popular maintenance director who was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor. Albert and his family relocated to Bloomingdale from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina destroyed their home in 2005. He quickly became involved with the nearby St. Stephen Catholic Church in Valrico and later joined the church's maintenance staff. …
