'I'm Just Sitting Here Crying,' Bloomingdale Catholics React to New Pope

Catholics throughout the area tuned in today as Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was named pope.

Nellie Negron couldn't contain her tears as she watched the televised announcement of the naming of the new pope. "I'm just sitting here crying," said Negron, a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church in Valrico. "I can't believe it. It's a very emotional moment." Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76, archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina, was elected pope earlier today, taking the name Francis I, the first pope to choose the name "Francis." For Negron, the election of the first Latin American pope is especially significant. She was born in Puerto Rico and spent a lot of time working in Argentina. "I really love that country," she said. "The people are so wonderful." With 39 percent of the world's Catholics living in Latin America, many in …

'Singing Server' to Perform on American Idol Tonight, Feb. 6

Newsome High School graduate Dan Wood is expected to sing on Hollywood Round Part I of the popular television show starting at 8 p.m. on Fox Television.

Fellow graduates from Newsome High School, co-workers at Circles Bar & Grill in Apollo Beach and friends from St. Stephen Catholic Church in Valrico will all be tuned in to tonight's American Idol television show to see hometown boy Dan Wood fulfill his dream of performing on the popular television show. But none are more excited about tonight's season premiere than Wood's own mother, Cindy. "This is unbelievable," said Cindy Wood, who accompanied her 22-year-old son to Hollywood for the taping of tonight's show. "I've been on this ride with him for a long time. He’s come a long way." Ironically, Circles Bar & Grill's "singing server" never showed much interest in singing as a youngster, said his mom. "He never really sang as a child," she…

Crosses Vandalized at St. Stephen Church

Parishioners at St. Stephen Catholic Church are wondering why someone would destroy a display of crosses intended to bring awareness to lives sacrificed in abortion.

It took volunteers with St. Stephen Catholic Church's Respect Life Ministry hours to set up wooden crosses on the church property to remember the lives lost since the 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court case that legalized abortion. But it took vandals only moments to destroy the display. Some time during the late-night hours of Jan. 29-30, vandals demolished the display of white crosses in front of the church in Valrico, at 5049 Bell Shoals Road, either breaking the crosses or tossing them into a nearby retention pond on the church propery. Ministry leader Jeanne Lewis said the volunteers, who have been displaying the crosses annually, were surprised by the level of destruction. She said she feels it's not only a …

By the way Cathi ... "HE" (by whom I assume you are referring to G-d) is not a corporeal being. "HE" is an image created in the minds eye based upon scripture that is interpreted by others and presented to you in a prescribed manner for maximum control of your attitude and opinions. MY version of G-d wants individuals to be educated and have free will over their bodies. MY G-d hates abortion as …   more ›

Merry Christmas From Bloomingdale-Riverview Patch

"But the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.'"

As a professional photographer and parishioner of St. Stephen Catholic Church in Valrico, Rick Tauceda is often called on to photograph church events. This time was no exception. He received a phone call from Gretchen Robens, the communications director for the church, asking him if he'd be willing to photograph a young family for the cover of the church's quarterly magazine. "The objective was to have them represent the Holy Family in a nativity setting," said Tauceda. "I agreed, and the following night the Riethmiller family was knocking at my door." Bradley and Joelle Riethmiller of Riverview are the parents of four young children. Joelle Riethmiller showed up with all four kids, Abby, Emma, Ian and baby Ave, carrying scarves, shepherd …
