Spoto High's Cassandra Mattison Named Hillsborough Teacher of the Year

Cassandra Mattison, a graduate of King High School, was named 2012-13 Teacher of the Year for Hillsborough County at a banquet hosted by the Hillsborough Education Foundation on March 28.

  The Spoto High School community was set to congratulate Cassandra Mattison back at school today, the morning after she was named Hillsborough County Teacher of the Year, at a March 28 banquet hosted by the Hillsborough Education Foundation. In accepting the award, Mattison "thanked the teachers at every school she has attended in Hillsborough County, starting with Shaw Elementary and ending with King High School," according to a Tampa Bay Times report on the event. "I would not be standing where I am today if it were not for teachers like you," she reportedly told the audience of more than 2,000 educators. Girl Scouts Raise Funds for Trip to Scotland

The Girl Scouts from Riverview and Spoto high schools have scheduled several fundraisers this month for their upcoming trip.

Six teens in Girl Scout Troop 707 have been busy saving their pennies and hosting fundraisers in the hopes of touring Scotland this summer. To further their fundraising efforts, the teens who attend Riverview and Spoto high schools will be wrapping holiday gifts at Books A Million at Westfield Brandon mall and referring family and friends to Menchie's in Winthrop Town Center where a portion of sales go to the troop. "Four years ago the girls took a trip to Asheville, N.C.," said troop co-leader Stephanie Wilson. "They were responsible for planning the entire itinerary and raising the necessary funds. Brandon Ballet's 'Nutcracker' a Holiday Tradition

Brandon Ballet will present four performances of the favorite seasonal ballet, Tchaikovsky’s  "The Nutcracker," Dec. 8-9. The holiday classic will feature new choreography by Brandon Ballet artistic director, Octavio Martin, professional dancers, lavish costumes and scenery, and a score that will leave audiences dazzled. The ballet tells the story of a little girl named Clara who, on the eve of Christmas, receives a wonderful gift, a wooden toy nutcracker from her mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer. Local Seniors Prepare for Graduation

Students prepare to don caps and gowns in pursuit of diplomas.

Local seniors are preparing to walk down the aisle to accept their diplomas. At Bloomingdale High School, an anticipated 580 students will graduate June 4 at 4:30 p.m. at the Florida State Fairgrounds Expo Hall. The class valedictorian is Noah Stebbins with an 8.03 grade point average. The salutatorian is Grant Sprow with a 7.36 grade point average. The class president is Robert Rivers. Commencement speakers will be Principal Mark West, Stebbins and Sprow. At Durant High School, 490 students will accept diplomas June 1 at 4:30 p.m. at the Florida State Fairgrounds Expo Hall. Spoto Beats Out Competition at Percussion Fest; Newsome Places 2nd

Schools far and near participated in the Newsome Indoor Percussion Festival Saturday at Randall Middle School.

Loaded down with an assortment of percussion instruments ranging from bass and tenor drums to cymbals and chimes, high school bands from throughout the Tampa Bay area converged at Randall Middle School Saturday, Feb. 18, for the Indoor Percussion Festival hosted by Newsome High School. Thirteen school drum lines and percussion bands competed for top spots during the event, which was as much about choreograpy and costumes as it was about music. Judges for the event included Jim Lindroth of Tampa, Noah Bellamy of Fort Lauderdale, Jared Johnson of Deland and John Meyers.
