Changes Coming to Bright Futures Scholarships?

Families counting on this state program to help fund college dreams might find the rules of the game changing soon.

  The state’s lottery-funded Bright Futures Scholarship tuition program is entering troubled financial waters and some say it’s time to change the rules of the game. “There’s more money going out than going in,” said Sen. John Legg, R-Lutz. Legg chairs his chamber’s education committee and sits on the education appropriations subcommittee. “Lottery revenues are increasing by about 4 percent a year,” said Legg. The problem is the money going out to Bright Futures awardees is increasing at a rate of about 13 to 14 percent a year, he added. “It’s not going to be able to sustain itself much longer.” Bright Futures was established in 1997 to create a merit-based scholarship program that would use lottery money two fund two main programs, …

Valrico Resident Helps Student Athletes Land Scholarships

Jim Delaney is the West Central Florida recruiting director for RecruitLook, a national company that helps student athletes get college scholarships.

The rising costs of college combined with the fierce competition for scholarship dollars is leaving some student athletes out in the cold when it comes to higher education. However, Valrico resident Jim Delaney is helping student athletes achieve their dream of playing college sports. Delaney is the West Central Florida recruiting director for RecruitLook, a national company that focuses on helping student athletes obtain college scholarships. Delaney, who played baseball at Bloomingdale High School (he graduated in 1990) and now coaches at the Bloomingdale Little League, said it's become his passion to help talented high school student athletes move on to the college level. FishHawk Road Runners Present Scholarships

Cormac McCarthy and Michael Babinec are this year's recipients.

Two graduating seniors will run with a lighter financial load thanks to scholarships from the FishHawk Road Runners Club. For five years, the runners club has presented scholarships to a graduating senior who is involved in the sport of running senior and excels academically. This year, however, the club had two worthy recipients so awarded duo $1,000 scholarships. Running club founder Steve Dunn, owner of Hit the Trails, and club treasurer Mike Conti presented Cormac McCarthy of Bloomingdale High School and Michael Babinec of Riverview High School with scholarships.
