Town History: Riverview High Wasn't Always 'Riverview High'

The Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce's April 23 luncheon was sponsored by the Riverview High School Athletic Booster Club at The Regent. There, principal Robert "Bob" Heilmann talked about the school's history and achievements.

    Riverview High School Principal Robert "Bob" Heilmann acknowledged at the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce luncheon this week that his school, indeed, has had many accolades and accomplishments. As principal, he added, "I just drive the bus," after which he applauded the work of  teachers, students, parents, coaches, school administrators and groups and organizations, including Angela Slater, who this year registered her 500th win as a high school softball coach in Hillsborough County. Heilmann said he hoped the business leaders knew what was "going on at 11311 Boyette Road, besides the traffic jams," in reference to the school's address and the ongoing road-widening construction from FishHawk Boulevard through Boyette Road. Giving blood at blood drives hits home with Renee Gandy, a mother who thanked hundreds of Riverview High School students for doing just that.

  The Riverview High School cafeteria was packed with cheering students  earllier this month, who along with their teachers and principal marked a milestone achievement among schools nationwide in the cause of blood donations. At the ceremony in recognition of receiving the "School Blood Drive Award" from oneblood.org, Renee Gandy took a moment to thank hundreds of students for giving blood while her son, Joshua, who turned 11 that day, stood by her side. "When I was in high school, which was a long, long time ago, I thought that when you donated blood it went to victims of serious accidents, people that were having surgeries," she said. Riverview Coach Recognized for 500th Win

Riverview High School teacher Angela Slater was recognized at the April 2013 Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce meeting for her 500th win as a softball coach in Hillsborough County.

  Angela Slater was one of the many people singled out at the April 23 membership luncheon of the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce, sponsored by the Riverview High School Athletic Booster Club. Slater's claim to fame is that this year she won her 500th victory as a softball coach in Hillsborough County, where she has been teaching for 28 years, including the first 13 at Brandon High and the next 15 at Riverview. The milestone win came March 26 at East Bay High School, where the Riverview Sharks, trailing with two outs in the final inning, scored a 9-6 victory after a three-run homer by Jordan Phillips. Local business leaders celebrate the achievements of Riverview High School, at a Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce luncheon sponsored by the Riverview High School Athletic Booster Club.

Throughout the banquet room at The Regent in Riverview people were seen dressed in black, blue and white, wearing the school colors of Riverivew High School, as the April 23 luncheon of the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce got under way. At the luncheon were lots of sharks, stuffed and human, in recognition of the school's mascot. The luncheon was sponsored by the Riverview High School Athletic Booster Club. The featured speaker was principal Robert "Bob" Heilmann, who talked about the school's history and its many achievements, including its recent recognition as the nation's top school in blood donations. The Frenzie On Stage at Riverview High

The Frenzie community theater troupe is back on stage with "a non-musical glimpse at relationships." The show is for one weekend only, March 28-30.

    The Frenzie is back on stage in the Greater Brandon area with a "non-musical glimpse at relationships" starring four actors, Pedro Amaral, Justin Batten, Kim Davis and Amber McCollum. Appropriately titled, "2 Guys, 2 Girls, 1 Stage," the show is a compilation of one-acts that director and Frenzie co-founder Michael Mercer put together for a unique theater experience on the Riverview High School stage. "The show deals with all kinds of relationships, love relationships, family relationships, some really funny and some are much more serious," said Mercer, who founded The Frenzie Life Theatre, now known as The Frenzie Performance Factory, with his wife, Beverly Mercer, in 2007. 'Team Heather' Stays Strong at 2013 Riverview Relay For Life

Heather Creek is remembered for her courageous 13-year fight with four cancer battles. Her friends and family locally are joined by relatives and friends from Ohio at the annual Riverview Relay For Life at Riverview High School.

  Marv Creek was married to Heather Creek for 41 years, and it's her 13-year fight with four cancer battles that brings him, relatives and friends to the Riverveiw Relay For Life, where they walk to remember as "Team Heather." "Who was Heather Creek? She was my best friend," said Barbara Jones Keplinger, who met Creek when the two women worked at the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. "Who is she now? She's my guardian angel." At the 2013 Riverveiw Relay For Life, Keplinger joined her husband, her grandchildren, Marv Creek and his daughter and grandchildren, and other friends and family members who walked in memory of Heather at Riveriew High School. Riverview Idol Concludes Tonight, 5 Finalists Vie for 2013 Crown

The Riverview Idol contest at Riverview High School concludes tonight, March 19, with "American Idol" Top 13 finisher Jeremy Rosado of Valrico set to perform and judge.

  Five singers have advanced to the final round of 2103 Riverview Idol competition, which is set to begin tonight, March 19, at 7 p.m., at Riverview High School. Jeremy Rosado of Valrico, cheered on by the Greater Brandon community in his 2012 run for the American Idol crown, is set to both perform and judge. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $5. En route to the finals, the contestants performed Feb. 26 in a field of 25 singers, followed by a Top 10 round a week later.
