The bird count began Friday at 5 p.m. and continues until Sunday at 5 p.m.
Bird lovers will be out and about all weekend long trying to spot various species of birds as part of The Big Birding Weekend. The race to count the most species of birds began Friday, Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. and continues until Sunday, Jan. 27 at 5 p.m. Teams of five are scouring parks and preservation areas for a chance to figuratively bag the most birds and win a trophy. The event is hosted by Rich's Backyard Birds at 5670 FishHawk Blvd., Lithia, as a way to promote an appreciation of Nature's feathered friends. More than 10 teams signed on to participate and will gather back at Rich's Backyard Birds at the end of the weekend for a trophy presentation, door prizes and bird tales. According to the results of the fourth annual FishHawk …

Why travel great distances to purchase gifts this holiday season? The Bloomingdale-Riverview area has a wealth of small businesses that carry a unique array of gifts for every member of the family. Here are some of my favorites: For the nature lover or the child with an innate curiosity about all things scientific, Rich's Backyard Birds offers gifts shoppers won't find anywhere else. Owner Rich Crete sells a large selection of science kits for kids ages 4 to 12 including crystal-growing kits, Disgusting Science, a solar science kit, a kit to build a potato clock, a backyard explorer kit, a magic science kit, ant hills and live butterfly gardens. "They're really neat, fun and kids learn something that doesn't involve a television screen…

River Hills resident John Costin has won dozens of awards for his intaglio prints of native Florida birds.
Rich Crete didn’t know the customer’s name. He only knew the man was a fellow bird lover who frequently visited Crete’s store, Rich’s Backyard Birds, in FishHawk Ranch, to purchase bird seed. Each time the customer visited, he paid cash for his purchases. Then, a few months ago, the customer paid with a credit card. “I immediately recognized the name,” said Crete. That’s because Crete owns several works of bird art signed with that name. The customer turned out to be renowned Tampa Bay bird artist John Costin, a resident of River Hills. “I asked him if he’d be interested in selling some of his artwork in my store and, lo and behold, he agreed,” said Crete. “It was a perfect fit.” To celebrate having Costin’s work in his store, Crete will …
