Area Schools to Participate in 9/11 Remembrance Activities

Newsome High School, Randall Middle School and Kingsway Elementary School are among the schools that will host special observances.

Local schools will commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 in various ways this Friday, Sept. 9. Among the observances is a Patriots Day Celebration at 9:30 a.m. at Kingswood Elementary School, 3102 S. Kings Ave., Brandon. Each grade level will wear an assigned colored shirt (red, white or blue). The classes will then gather by shirt color around the school flag pole. Patriotic songs will be performed by each grade, and the Tampa Bay Technical High School color guard will conduct a flag ceremony and pledge. All parents are invited, and those in the military or law enforcement are encouraged to come in uniform. Randall Middle School Student To Receive Honor

Eighth-grade student Jessica Martinez will receive the YEA Award April 20 at County Center.

In many ways 15-year-old Jessica Martinez is just a typical teenager. She enjoys listening to her iPod, hanging out with friends, playing badminton, winning hula hoop contests and shopping at the mall, especially Abercrombie & Fitch and Aeropostale. But Jessica has triumphed over many challenges to become a regular teenager. Born with a significant hearing loss, Jessica wears a hearing aid and participates in therapies designed to improve her communication ability. Through the use of an iCom, an innovative device that allows her to interface her hearing aid to modern communication devices such as her iPod, computer and cell phone, Jessica has even more ability to connect with the world. FishHawk Road Race Enters 14th Year

The 14th Annual FishHawk Road Race will be held on Saturday, Feb. 5, benefiting six area schools.

It’s time to put on your tennis shoes, stretch those muscles, and get ready to run for a great cause. The 14th Annual FishHawk Ranch Road Race, which benefits community schools, is scheduled for Saturday Feb. 5. The annual race consists of three races allowing for runners of all levels. A 5K and 10K timed race will commence from Park Square at 8 a.m. and a kids race will begin at 9:30am. “There are two kids races – one for the very little ones that is about fourth mile, and another for the older children which is 1 mile. All participants receive a medal at the finish line,” Lynda McMorrow, the Newland Communities marketing coordinator, stated.
