Now that the Republican National Convention is a memory, we want to hear your thoughts on how the county’s law enforcement agencies performed.
Hundreds of law enforcement officers from agencies all over the Tampa Bay area converged on downtown Tampa last week to keep the peace during the Republican National Convention. The Tampa Police Department estimates 3,500 officers from various agencies pitched in to keep the county safe as thousands of visitors from all over the country came to town, according to spokeswoman Andrea Davis. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office alone assigned more than 1,000 deputies to the downtown area during the convention’s four-day run. Other agencies from around the county also lent some of their finest to what was likely the biggest law enforcement undertaking in Tampa Bay history. As the RNC unfolded, stories about the professionalism of …

Fed up with problems from RNC-provided buses, the Republican Party of Florida hired a charter bus company to transport its delegates.
The Republican Party of Florida is hoping delegates will have a smoother ride for the rest of the convention, now that the organization has chartered a bus company to provide transportation. On Tuesday, delegates were late to the opening day of the Republican National Convention because RNC-contracted buses were not sent to pick them up. Then the delegates were stuck on buses for hours Tuesday after the convention ended for the evening. "It was an absolute mess up," said Florida delegate Pat Fahey of Daytona Beach. Fahey did not arrive back to Palm Harbor's Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club until after 3 a.m. Wednesday. "Nobody knew where the buses were located when we came out of the convention. Everybody was sending us to a different place. …

Romney will address education, the economy and the national debt.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s much-anticipated acceptance speech for the Republican nomination for president is expected to begin at 10 p.m. tonight. But, for those who just can't wait, Romney's campaign released a preview of his speech, which will encompass everything from job growth to education. Among the issues Romney will address is America's dependence on foreign energy sources. Romney vows that, if elected, North America will be energy independent by 2020 by taking full advantage of "full advantage of our oil and coal and gas and nuclear and renewables." Romney also will discuss ways to improve the education of American children by giving parents more schools choice. "When it comes to the school your child will attend, …
Tessa and Scott Fullerton came to downtown Tampa on Thursday to check out the Republican National Convention only to find not much going on — although they did make a TV cameo.
Tessa and Scott Fullerton may be Republicans, but they still would have come to downtown Tampa on Thursday if it was the Democrats who were holding their national convention here. "But I wouldn't have bought a bracelet," said Tessa, holding up a string of Hawaiian Kukui nuts painted red, white and blue and with GOP logos on them. The FishHawk Ranch couple came to Channelside in downtown Tampa to check out the last day of the RNC. They said they wished there were a few more events going on, although they did get on camera in the background of a live MSNBC show filming there. "We weren't crazy, we were just Facebooking, 'look now, we're on TV!' " Tessa said. Scott, who works in private equity, said they didn't encounter much traffic on the …

They’ll have to make a 15-minute hike to the convention tomorrow.
First they were left without transportation from Palm Harbor’s Innisbrook Resort to the Republican National Convention in downtown Tampa. Then they were stuck on a bus for hours following the convention Tuesday night – not making it back to the resort until after 3 a.m. Wednesday, according to TBO. Now, Florida’s Republican delegation is facing a 15-minute hike from the security perimeter to the convention as officials try to straighten out the transportation problems facing the state’s top GOPers. Hundreds of protesters marched through Ybor City to the Tampa Bay Times Forum to voice their dissatisfaction with the GOP agenda.
Sporting a bandana and aviator sunglasses, greeting fellow protesters with a peace sign, David Gonzalez of Brandon resembled a refugee from the 1960s. In fact, said Gonzalez, not much has changed politically over the past 40 years. "Just like back then, There are people today who are being denied the basic right to vote," said Gonzalez. "It's wrong and it has to stop." Gonzalez was among hundreds of protesters who gathered in Centennial Park in Ybor City Aug. 28 to rally against efforts by the Tea Party and other right-wing groups to purge 180,000 registered voters from state voting lists on the basis that they are ineligible to vote because they are ex-felons or noncitizens. The opposition claims the purge is an attempt to suppress likely…
An Odessa mortgage broker is selling "NOBAMA 2012" wristbands outside the Republican National Convention this week in Tampa.
Are you against President Barack Obama but don't know how to show it? Bob Caruso has your answer. The Odessa mortgage broker is hawking his "NOBAMA 2012" wristbands this week in Tampa's Channelside, just a few blocks from the site of the Republican National Convention. Caruso started his website, nobamawristbands.com, a few years ago, but he's hoping the rubber, red, white and blue wristbands he sells for $4 apiece online really take off during the RNC. To do that, he said, he just needs to get them in the hands of the right person. He's tried conservative pundit Sean Hannity, and he ran into former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele on the street corner Tuesday, where he was set up with his wristbands outside the …
