Newsome High School students Grayson Myer-Bruce and Mark Burgan are collecting jump ropes, tennis shoes, backpacks and other items for children at the El Ayudante Family Enrichment Center.
Two Newsome High School students are hosting a collection drive for impoverished children in Nicaragua. Grayson Myer-Bruce and Mark Burgan will head to Leon, Nicaragua, in June to volunteer at a school for children living in extreme poverty, and hope to take items the children desperately need. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the world, with 80 percent of the population living on less than $2 a day. Most of the children at the school do not even own shoes, the teens noted. Therefore, they are collecting all sizes of new or used tennis shoes in good condition for the youngsters as well as flip-flops or kids' sandals, soccer ball, baseballs, softballs, jump ropes, backpacks, baseball caps, pens and pencils, notebooks and paper. …

Kirk and Laura Smalley have spoken to about 600,000 kids, hoping to prevent more deaths like the one that claimed their son. It was just less than two years ago that the couple lost their 11-year old son, Ty, to suicide after he had suffered years of bullying abuse. For the last 19 months, they have toured the country using their organization, Stand For The Silent, to reach those affected by bullying. The Smalleys are being asked every day to visit schools around the country to educate students, parents, teachers and school administrators about bullying and share their story in the hopes that the abuse will stop. "We go to the schools and tell them what happened to Ty," Kirk Smalley said. "There are a lot of other stories like Ty's, and we…

The relays took place Saturday at Riverview and Newsome high schools.
An hour of unexpected rain showers didn't dampen spirits Saturday, March 31, at the FishHawk and Riverview Relays for Life. After taking temporary refuge beneath tents and in the schools' cafeterias, the teams promptly got back to the business of walking their respective tracks and selling everything from baked goods to cancer awareness bracelets. "This is my first time doing this," said Nick Behringer, who posed as the Cat in the Hat for photos to raise funds for the FishHawk relay at Newsome High School. "It's a fun way to spread the word about cancer and a great way to raise some money." The FishHawk relay featured a storybook theme that included such classics as "Goodnight, Moon," "The Gingerbread Man" and "Harold and the Purple Crayon…

News Report When pigs fly... That's probably the expression that best describes first-time fair participant Lindsey White's chances of raising and showing the heavy-weight division champion pig at the 2012 Florida State Fair this weekend. Yet, that is exactly what happened this past Sunday. White is a junior at Newsome High School and this is her first year raising competition livestock as a member of the Future Farmers of America. Her pig, Bernard, tipped the scales at 307 pounds, an impressive outcome considering his starting weight in October was only 70 pounds. White's interest in FFA stems from her genuine love for animals and her desire to pursue a career in veterinary science. Judging from her performance so far, she is well on her …
