Steve Dunn, founder of the FishHawk Road Runners Club, said he's been in contact with all five members of his club running today's Boston Marathon and reports that all are safe following the bombing.
A longtime marathon runner, owner of Hit the Trails running store in FishHawk Ranch and founder of the FishHawk Road Runners Club, Steve Dunn has tackled the difficult Boston Marathon a number of times. This year he decided to sit the marathon out but was intently watching television coverage of the event Monday, April 15, to see five members of his running club traverse the streets of Boston. He had just left his FishHawk Ranch home to head to his store on FishHawk Boulevard when he received word that a bomb exploded as the first runners crossed the finish line. To ensure that all residents in the area have a Merry Christmas, the Seeds of Hope food pantry, founded by FishHawk Ranch resident Leda Eaton, is hosting "A Child Shivers in the Night" blanket drive, collecting new and used blankets for the children of migrant farmworkers and other residents in need to keep them warm during chilly weather. In addition, the food bank is collecting new and barely used toys for needy children. Children range in age from infants to teens. The donations will be given out during the Seeds of Hope Christmas food distribution Dec. 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Grace Community Church, 5708 Lithia-Pinecrest Rd., Lithia. Be prepared for traffic tie-ups at the intersection of Bell Shoals and Boyette roads as the county detours traffic to accommodate construction at the intersection. According to Hillsborough County spokesman Steve Valdez, the detour will take place Nov. 16-19. Valdez said southbound traffic on Bell Shoals will be forced to take a right on Boyette Road at the intersection and then a left onto Deepbrook Drive in Boyette Springs. Deepbrook connects to a new road that doesn't yet have a name. That road will take drivers back to Boyette Road south of Bell Shoals Road. Cormac McCarthy and Michael Babinec are this year's recipients.
Two graduating seniors will run with a lighter financial load thanks to scholarships from the FishHawk Road Runners Club. For five years, the runners club has presented scholarships to a graduating senior who is involved in the sport of running senior and excels academically. This year, however, the club had two worthy recipients so awarded duo $1,000 scholarships. Running club founder Steve Dunn, owner of Hit the Trails, and club treasurer Mike Conti presented Cormac McCarthy of Bloomingdale High School and Michael Babinec of Riverview High School with scholarships. Most people have dozens hanging in their closet and in their dresser drawers. But for the homeless who Charlie McGowan ministers to, a T-shirt represents more than a piece of clothing. "They're a sign of love and comfort," said McGowan, founder of Kay's Ministry for the homeless at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Valrico. "It means someone cared enough about them to give them something they need." Hearing stories about the needs of the homeless, FishHawk Ranch sisters Emilie and Katie Dunn decided to launch a T-shirt collection drive April 15. Whether running is your sport or you simply want to get in condition for the fall team sports season, this clinic is for you. Steve Dunn, owner of Hit the Trails running store, 13433 FishHawk Blvd., Lithia, along with former Riverview High School football coach Larry Bass, will host the fifth annual Summer Running Clinic on Aug. 8-12 and Aug. 15-19.
