FCAT, RNC, New Technology Dominate Back-to-School Conference

At a time when the economy is sluggish, testing scores controversial and teacher morale low, the Hillsborough County School District is holding its own, according to Schools Superintendent MaryEllen Elia. Elia and Hillsborough County School Board members were on hand Aug. 17 for the annual back-to-school news conference at the Rampello Downtown Partnership K-8 School in downtown Tampa. With FCAT testing mired in controversy, Elia said the school district is looking at the National Assessment of Education Progress, the nation's report card, to determine how Hillsborough County students are doing. "We've been gratified with the results," said Elia. "Our fourth-grade students had the highest reading scores of any large urban school district. …

Races to Watch During Today's Primary

Republicans and Democrats have a chance to vote for the candidate of their choice to run on the November ballot.

For those who didn't already take advantage of the chance to vote early, Tuesday, Aug. 14, is the day to vote for candidates in a number of crucial elections. Registered voters will be able to cast their ballots for the candidates in their own parties that they want to move onto the final election Nov. 6. In addition, there are several nonpartisan races including Hillsborough County School Board and judgeships. According to the Supervisor of Elections Office, 20,197 voters took advantage of the chance to cast early votes. In addition, 36,578 Vote By Mail ballots have been returned. There are 707,217 people registered to vote in Hillsborough County -- 289,675 Democrats, 237,025 Republicans and 180,517 voters who list their party affiliation…

Additional School Board Redistricting Meetings Scheduled

Five more meetings will be held to receive public input.

The Hillsborough County School Board, in conjunction with the Planning Commission and Supervisor of Elections Office, will host five additional meetings throughout the community to provide information and receive public input on four options for redrawing School Board member districts 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The School Board originally was presented three options and held public meetings and a workshop on those boundary proposals. Since then, a board member has requested an additional option. This process is required by Florida law to occur in the year after the U.S. Census is taken. School Board Names New Principal at Newsome, Presents Perfect Attendance Awards to High School Seniors

Carla Bruning, current principal at King High School, will replace retiring Newsome Principal Rebecca Fitzgerald.

The Hillsborough County School Board voted unanimously to transfer King High School Principal Carla Bruning to Newsome High School to fill the shoes of retiring Newsome Principal Rebecca Fitzgerald. The vote came today during the board’s regular meeting. School board members Jack Lamb and April Griffin said they voted in favor of the transfer reluctantly. “We are going to be very sorry to lose you at King,” Lamb told Bruning. “You’re going to be missed by the entire Temple Terrace community,” added Griffin. “Newsome is very lucky to get you.
