County To Offer Online Summer Camp Registration

Online registration will be available beginning May 6 at noon.

For the first time, Hillsborough County will offer online registration for Parks, Recreation and Conservation programs. Summer camp programs will be the first available through online registration beginning May 6 at noon. This new service allows prospective participants to browse, register and pay for programs offered at county parks. Online payments can be made with a credit/debit card. Check and money order payments are received at Rec2Six locations only.  The new online registration system is currently open for park patrons to create online profiles and to browse programs only. Great Escape: Explore the Area's Waterways By Canoe

Hillsborough County now offers four-hour canoe rentals at a number of parks throughout the area.

Looking for a fun, low-cost activity for the entire family? The Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department is inviting residents to explore the county's scenic waterways by canoe or kayak. The county offers four-hour canoe rentals for $25 Monday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to two hours before park closing. A park entry fee will also apply at $2 per vehicle carrying up to eight people, and $1 for each additional person. Only cash, check and traveler’s check payments will be accepted at this time. These parks are open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the winter months. Parks offering rentals include: Canoes or kayaks can be rented on site at each entry station. Plan to Expand FishHawk Sports Complex Gets Residents' Approval

Mark Thornton, director of the county Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department, met with residents last night to discuss the revised plan.

Under a new proposal to expand the FishHawk Sports Complex, the soccer program will get the fields it desperately needs, protected gopher tortoises will get a new home and Starling residents will get peace and quiet. Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation director Mark Thornton outlined the plan at a meeting at the Palmetto Club Wednesday night where a show of hands indicated residents approved of the concept. In an agreement hashed out with the help of FishHawk Ranch developer Newland Communities, the parks department plans to add four new soccer fields north of the existing complex on 20 acres currently owned by Newlands Communities and designated for conservation. FishHawk Residents to Weigh in on Plans to Expand Sports Complex

The public meeting will be held tonight at the Palmetto Club.

Members of the county parks staff will take another stab at a plan to expand the FishHawk Sports Complex that all residents can agree upon. A public meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Palmetto Club, 17004 Dorman Rd., Lithia. At the meeting, members of the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department will discuss a new plan to expand the sports complex with five more fields for the soccer and football programs along with parking. At the urging of soccer parents and players, the county first proposed an expansion of the complex in December 2011 to accommodate the growing soccer program. Flooding Continues to Impact County Parks

Residents planning to spend Labor Day weekend at a county park should beware of closures.

Tropical Storm Isaac may be long gone but it's left its impact at a number of Hillsborough County parks. According to the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department, flooding has limited activities at eight parks, among them Dead River Park at 15098 Dead River Rd., Thonotosassa, which is entirely closed to visitors.   Other parks affected by flood include Aldermans Ford Park on the Alafia River in southeast Hillsborough. The river is closed to canoing and some walking trails are closed. The boat ramp at Edward Medard Park off Turkey Creek Road in closed. Tampa Bay Senior Games Set for Oct. 1-12

News Report Seniors can go for the gold at the 32nd annual Tampa Bay Senior Games Oct.1-12. Registration is open until Sept. 21 for anyone age 50 or older as of Dec. 31. The games feature two weeks of competition in various activities, such as basketball, billiards, bowling, cribbage, dominoes, golf, hobby show, pickleball, pinochle, swimming, table tennis, talent showcase, tennis and track and field. New events this year include softball and corn hole. The entry fee is $20 and includes unlimited participation in the games, a ticket to the awards luncheon, opening ceremony continental breakfast and T-shirt. County Seeks Scenic Photos of Environmental Lands

Residents are asked to submit their best photos showing the beauty of the county's conservation lands by Sept. 24.

News Report With thousands of acres of environmental lands to serve as their inspiration, amateur and professional photographers are invited to submit their best photos depicting Hillsborough County natural beauty in the Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program’s (ELAPP) Calendar Photo Contest. Photographers should submit their best photos of ELAPP properties throughout the county between now and Sept. 24 to Ross Dickerson, Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department. Brandon Skate Park 'Band Jam/Skate Jam' (Photos and Video)

The newly opened Brandon Skate Park at Providence Park East in Riverview hosted its first "Band Jam/Skate Jam" on July 14. Hillsborough County parks officials plan to make this an annual event.
