Extension Center to Host 4-H Camps

The week-long camps start June 25.

News Report From robotics to food chemistry and inventions to dinosaurs, Hillsborough County’s 4-H clubs will hold four different types of summer camps specially designed for children in grades one to six. Each camp will offer kids the opportunity to explore and have different experiences in the world of science. Junk Yard Robotics - June 25-29, 8 a.m. - noon; $25 per child. Kids will explore the design and function of robotic arms, hands and grippers and build a robotic arm that really moves. They will also design and build machines that roll, slide, draw or move underwater and explore robot mobility movement, power transfer and locomotion. This camp is suggested for grades two to six. A ceremony to honor Korean War veterans and a football camp are some of the activities on tap for today.

1. The Veterans Council of Hillsborough County will hold a Korean War Remembrance Day ceremony today at Hillsborough County Veterans Memorial Park, 3602 U.S. 301 N. in Tampa. The ceremony will start at 11 a.m. with the theme, A Day to Remember. Taking place 61 years ago, more than 1.5 million American men and women served during the Korean War, where more than 54,000 Americans were killed, 103,000 wounded and 8,000 missing are still considered missing. The Korean War is referred to as the Forgotten War, sandwiched between the national unity of World War II and the national discord of the Vietnam War. Summer camps and a benefit for a mom in need are on tap for today.

1. Do you constantly complain that your teen has no concept of money? Here's a camp that may help. Hillsborough County Extension, in partnership with United Way of Tampa Bay, is offering a Money Adventures Camp for teens age 13 to 16 years old. The camp will feature hands-on learning activities dealing with credit, banking, car buying, and job searches and interviewing. The camp will also include fun afternoon field trips to go bowling, visit MOSI/IMAX and play miniature golf.    The Money Adventures Camp will take place June 20-24 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hillsborough County Extension Office, 5339 County Road 579, Seffner, 33584.  Regular registration is $30. The Greater Brandon Area Friends of Scouting will honor four longtime residents who have been an integral part of area Boy Scouts during its 2011 Soaring Eagle Dinner June 16 at The Regent, 6437 Watson Road, Riverview. Residents interested in supporting the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Sea Scouts and Venturers are invited to the event, which will begin with a social hour at 6 p.m. followed by a dinner at 7 p.m. The atmosphere is casual and the dress is "camping chic."
