The Greater Brandon Community Foundation'S annual Winterfest continues today at Winthrop Town Centre on Bloomingdale Avenue. Sunday, Dec. 2 from noon to 5 p.m., there are bounce houses and slides, carnival games, hay rides, Santa's workshop, face painting, entertainment and craft vendors.

The Greater Brandon Community Foundation is planning a weekend filled with activities guaranteed to help the biggest Scrooge get into the spirit of the season. The foundation is hosting its third annual Winterfest at Winthrop Town Centre, 6030 Winthrop Town Centre Ave., Riverview, at the intersection of Bloomingdale Avenue and Providence Road Nov. 30 to Dec. 2. The festivities kick off Friday night from 7 to 10 p.m. with a tree-lighting ceremony, entertainment and a campfire and outdoor movies with s'mores and hot chocolate. The fun continues Saturday, Dec. 1 from 11 a.m. to sunset and Sunday, Dec. 2 from noon to 5 p.m. with bounce houses, hay rides, Santa's workshop, face painting, entertainment and craft vendors. The festival organized by the Greater Brandon Community Foundation will take place today in the field surrounding the Winthrop Pole Barn on Bloomingdale Avenue.
For Debbie Kenney and Denise Crawford of Bloomingdale, it was a chance to show off their handmade jewelry and accessories made from recycled flatware. Sarah Maddox was on hand selling intricately the embroidered banners and runners she creates. And Karen Hiller of Valrico took the opportunity to display her beadwork jewelry. Whatever the reason they came to the second annual Winthrop WinterFest, it spelled success for the festival organizers, the Greater Brandon Community Foundation . Sponsored byBeef ‘O’ Brady’s , tickets to the showdown are $5 and 100 percent of the proceeds will go toward Lyrics for Life, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to make a difference in the fight against pediatric cancer. There will be drawings for a Tony Dungy autographed football and Sister Hazel signed CDs. The students were victorious in 2010 after defeating their teachers in double-overtime. Last year's showdown raised more than $1,300 for Lyrics for Life in 2010. Patch was invited to the celebration of seven-plus years of dedicated service to the Greater Brandon Community Foundation.
In a celebration of friendship, colleagues and business associates joined together to honor Anne Nymark, founder and president of the Greater Brandon Community Foundation for the past seven years, Saturday evening at the Winthrop Barn Theatre. The foundation supports 53 charities in Brandon, raising funds through its annual Charity Golf Classic and other events. In the past seven years, the foundation has distributed more than $950,000 to local charities in the Greater Brandon community. In addition to providing grants to local charities, the foundation hosts an Angel Program in which it works with businesses and residents in the community to provide needed resources to residents facing emergencies. Strawberry Festival Queen dips season's first strawberries in chocolate at
For the second year, The Original Leena's Chocolates in Bloomingdale ushered in the strawberry season, inviting the Strawberry Festival queen to dip the season's first strawberries in chocolate this week. Natalie Burgin, 2010 Strawberry Festival queen, was on hand at Leena's Monday afternoon to help dip freshly picked strawberries from Brandon Farms in what has become a tradition for the chocolatier. An admitted chocoholic, Leena Caligiure, the mother of three children, fell into chocolate making while living in New York. She's only 26 years old, but she's already experienced a lifetime's worth of trials. At the age of 15, Autumn Henry of Riverview became pregnant. Her mother didn't understand her resistance to have an abortion and threw her out of her home. At one point, Henry and her daughter, Jordan, now 11, were homeless and had to seek shelter at a women's center. "I don't blame my mother," said Henry. "She had her own problems dealing with drugs and in and out of jail. How could she help me when she couldn't even help herself?" But Henry was able to get her life on track, graduate from high school with honors, and find a way to support herself and her daughter.
