News Report Four local Girl Scouts will be among 45 Scouts in west central Florida to receive their Girl Scout Gold Awards. The recognition event will take place Saturday, June 9 at the Museum of Science & Industry in Tampa. The Girl Scout Gold Award recognizes outstanding accomplishments in the areas of leadership, sustainable community service, career planning and personal development. A Girl Scout must be in at least ninth grade and successfully complete requirements before she begins working on her Gold Award project. “To earn a Gold Award, a Girl Scout must take all of the knowledge, leadership and networking skills she has developed over the years and set forth to complete a service project that will benefit her community,” said …

Liz Hinckley organized a 5k race Saturday to raise driver safety awareness.
To get the word out on the dangers of texting while driving and other reckless driving habits, Bloomingdale Girl Scout Liz Hinckley hosted a Drive Safe 5K June 18 at Alderman's Ford Park off County Road 39 in Lithia. At the race, she asked participants to sign a pledge to drive safely. Each person signing the pledge received a beaded bracelet made by Hinckley that spells out messages such as "No Texting" and "Drive Safely." It was all part of the Bloomingdale High School graduate's effort to earn her Gold Award in Girl Scouting. The Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can achieve. On June 5, 19 Girl Scouts in west central Florida received their Girl Scout Gold Awards - the highest achievement in Girl Scouting - at a recognition event at the Doubletree Hotel Tampa Westshore Airport. According to a press release from the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida, the Girl Scout Gold Award is the culmination of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, and the three keys to leadership: discover, connect and take action. Five local Girl Scouts will be among 19 girls from throughout west central Florida to receive their Girl Scout Gold Awards Sunday, June 5, at a recognition event at the Doubletree Hotel Tampa Westshore Airport. The Gold Award is the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. The award recognizes outstanding accomplishments in the areas of leadership, sustainable community service, career planning and personal development.
