Local Girl Scouts to Receive Gold Awards

Four local girls are among 45 Girl Scouts who will be honored June 9.

News Report Four local Girl Scouts will be among 45 Scouts in west central Florida to receive their Girl Scout Gold Awards. The recognition event will take place Saturday, June 9 at the Museum of Science & Industry in Tampa.   The Girl Scout Gold Award recognizes outstanding accomplishments in the areas of leadership, sustainable community service, career planning and personal development. A Girl Scout must be in at least ninth grade and successfully complete requirements before she begins working on her Gold Award project. “To earn a Gold Award, a Girl Scout must take all of the knowledge, leadership and networking skills she has developed over the years and set forth to complete a service project that will benefit her community,” said …

Girl Scouts to Offer Camping Experience for All Girls

Girls entering grades one through 12 are invited to attend a Girl Scout summer camp in June and July.

News Report Girl Scouts is celebrating 100 years of building girls of courage, confidence and character, and Girl Scouts of West Central Florida invites all girls entering grades one to 12 to celebrate with at camp this summer, whether or not they’re Girl Scouts. Overnight camps are offered throughout June and July at two of the council’s camp properties, and day camps are offered throughout the eight counties GSWCF serves. Non-Girl Scouts are welcome to register for summer camp, and many girls join each year through the camp pathway as part of the new-age membership model of Girl Scouts. Local Girl Scouts Keep It Clean in FishHawk

The Scouts collected more than 275 pounds of trash along the trails in FishHawk Ranch.

By Mags Oldman Starting off the new year, Girl Scouts from the Fossil Valley Community took to the trails of FishHawk Ranch on Saturday, Jan. 7, to Walk the Trails To Save The Planet.  In a combined effort to literally create a clean slate for all those who enjoy the trail system in FishHawk Ranch, 13 troops of various grade levels participated, including Daisies (K through first grade), Brownies second and third grade), Juniors (fourth and fifth grade) and Cadettes (sixth through eighth grade).  All told, the girls hauled in just over 275 pounds of trash from throughout portions of FishHawk Ranch. FishHawk Girl Scouts Raise Funds to Create Fitness Track

Madison Jung and Madison Lynn hope to build fitness stations around the track at the FishHawk Sports Complex.

Two FishHawk Ranch Girl Scouts are putting their muscle behind a project that will help residents in their community stay fit. Madison Jung and Madison Lynn, both 12, Randall Middle School students and members of Girl Scout Troop 279, have designed fitness stations along the track around the FishHawk Sports Complex on FishHawk Boulevard and are now raising funds to build the stations. They're doing the FitTrack 2012 project to earn their Silver Award in Girl Scouting, the highest honor a Girl Scout cadette can receive. They previously earned their Bronze Award by installing a flower garden at Steppin' Stone Farms, a residential home for at-risk teenage girls in Lithia, as part of a troop project. Viewfinder: Drive Safe 5K Race

Liz Hinckley organized a 5k race Saturday to raise driver safety awareness.

To get the word out on the dangers of texting while driving and other reckless driving habits, Bloomingdale Girl Scout Liz Hinckley hosted a Drive Safe 5K June 18 at Alderman's Ford Park off County Road 39 in Lithia. At the race, she asked participants to sign a pledge to drive safely. Each person signing the pledge received a beaded bracelet made by Hinckley that spells out messages such as "No Texting" and "Drive Safely." It was all  part of the Bloomingdale High School graduate's effort to earn her Gold Award in Girl Scouting. The Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can achieve. "You have to perform 60 service hours and complete a project to earn the Gold Award," explained Hinckley. Hinckley came up with the idea of hosting a …

On June 5, 19 Girl Scouts in west central Florida received their Girl Scout Gold Awards - the highest achievement in Girl Scouting - at a recognition event at the Doubletree Hotel Tampa Westshore Airport. According to a press release from the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida, the Girl Scout Gold Award is the culmination of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, and the three keys to leadership: discover, connect and take action.
