FFA Students Visit Elephant Refuge

Students from Riverview, Strawberry Crest and Lennard high schools got a close-up look at elephants at the Center for Elephant Conservation in Polk County.

Future Farmers of America students got a chance to examine an elephant farmers rarely encounter. FFA students from Riverview, Strawberry Crest and Lennard high schools attended an Animal Care Seminar at the Center for Elephant Conservation in Polk County Nov. 16 to learn more about the Asian elephant and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey's conservation efforts. Students toured part of the 200-acre facility and participated in an interactive seminar. The students were also able to get up close and personal with a couple of the elephants and feed them. With less than 35,000 Asian elephants left in the wild, and the habitat of those in the wild increasingly threatened, captive breeding programs like the one at the Ringling Bros. Center for …

Newsome Student Raises Award-Winning Pig

Lindsey White's pig was the heavy-weight division champion at the Florida State Fair.

News Report When pigs fly... That's probably the expression that best describes first-time fair participant Lindsey White's chances of raising and showing the heavy-weight division champion pig at the 2012 Florida State Fair this weekend. Yet, that is exactly what happened this past Sunday. White is a junior at Newsome High School and this is her first year raising competition livestock as a member of the Future Farmers of America. Her pig, Bernard, tipped the scales at 307 pounds, an impressive outcome considering his starting weight in October was only 70 pounds. White's interest in FFA stems from her genuine love for animals and her desire to pursue a career in veterinary science. Judging from her performance so far, she is well on her …
