The efforts of an 11-year-old girl combined with a fundraiser by the FishHawk Softball League last weekend netted $3,625 for OperationKidney. FishHawk Ranch resident Devon Carver said she was grateful for the community's support for her cause, intended to provide financial help to residents needing kidney transplants. It's a need Carver understands all too well. The 34-year-old mother is battling end-stage renal failure. She currently spends 12 hours a day on dialysis and, without a live kidney donor, she will die. Well aware of the financial costs facing families of kidney patients, Carver started OperationKidney to raise funds for medical bills and travel expenses. However, after telling her own story on Facebook, she began hearing from…

Individuals and organizations have come to the aid of FishHawk Ranch resident Devon Carter who started OperationKidney to raise funds for medical and travel expenses for those needing kidney transplants. It was difficult to tell who was panting more -- the dogs or their owners. Despite Saturday's heat, hundreds of canines accompanied by their human companions headed out to Circa FishHawk Saturday for the annual Dog Fest sponsored by Aliquity. The event, a fundraiser for pet charities, featured vendors, dog rescue groups, contests and demonstrations. Aliquity is a nonprofit group that hosts events that connect business owners to their communities while supporting local charities. Annual events hosted by Aliquity include Dog Fest, the Jingle Run at Bell Creek and a Chili Fest.
At the grand opening, the new dental practice raised funds for the Newsome High School Band and the MOMS Club of Lithia-Bevis.
Two generations of east Hillsborough County residents, as well as the generation to come, can thank the Busciglio family for picture-perfect smiles. Dr. John Busciglio began the family legacy in 1972 when he opened the first full-time orthodontic practice in the Brandon area. Now, as he retires this year, his children, Drs. Derek and Dana Busciglio, are prepared to pick up where their father left off. Not only will they oversee Busciglio Smiles offices in Brandon, Wesley Chapel and Plant City but the siblings just opened a practice in FishHawk Ranch, 16321 FishHawk Blvd., Lithia. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Busciglio Smiles and the opening of the new FishHawk Ranch office, the Busciglios and their staff held a grand opening event …

Cammie Yick is teaching baby sign language classes at several locations.
At the age of 12 months, Emma Carr already has an extensive vocabulary, including the words "please," "thanks," "milk" and "eat." However, she isn't communicating with baby talk. Instead, she uses sign language with the help of sign language instructor Cammie Yick of Dover. The founder of Sunshine Signing, Yick is a certified master Baby Signing Time instructor, teaching American sign language to children age 6 to 36 months. It's a skill, she said, that provides babies with a method of communicating long before they are able to form words. Yick began learning sign language while in high school because her best friend was deaf. She went on to receive her bachelor's degree in communications at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., which …

Food donations at the annual Park Square concert series totaled more than two tons.
Thousands of residents and concertgoers contributed more than 1,600 pounds of nonperishable food and nearly $700 to Feeding America Tampa Bay during FishHawk Ranch’s Concerts for a Cause throughout the past two months. These donations are equivalent to nearly 2.25 tons of food and total more than 3,600 meals. “This level of generosity surpassed our goal and last year’s total by more than a ton,” said Pam Parisi, director of marketing for Newland Communities. “This is the type of kindness and collaboration that we strive for in our communities.” Newland Communities, developer of FishHawk Ranch, put on the eight concerts free of charge for the public and only asked for a voluntary nonperishable donation in lieu of an admissions fee. “The …

It was a typical September morning in Queens, N.Y. Third-generation New Yorker Anthony Caligiure was preparing to head off to work at his job at Time Warner. His wife, Leena, pregnant with their second child, was already at work at Citigroup in midtown Manhattan. Around 9 a.m., Caliguire heard a plane fly over their apartment complex. Shortly after, he received a phone call from his mother, urging him to turn on the news. "I couldn't believe what I saw," said Caligiure, as he watched the events unfold following the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers on Sept. 11. "I said, 'We're at war.'" Although 11 years have passed since that fateful day, Caligiure said he'll never forget the feelings of fear and disbelief he experienced as he watched …

Tracey Magruder teaches singers, musicians of all ages.
With the recent opening of her private, home-based voice and piano school, FishHawk Ranch resident Tracey Magruder said she's living her dream. Music has played a major role in Magruder's life. "I've been performing as long as I can remember," she said. "I started singing as a kid and performed in my church choir, in community theater and dance classes. Then, when I was 13, I started taking piano lessons." The Maryland native began teaching piano at the age of 17 before heading to the American University in Washington, D.C., where she majored in voice performance. After graduation, she followed her parents to Florida in 2006. "I had the dream of performing on Broadway for awhile but realized I really, really love teaching," she said. "…

Tessa and Scott Fullerton came to downtown Tampa on Thursday to check out the Republican National Convention only to find not much going on — although they did make a TV cameo.
Tessa and Scott Fullerton may be Republicans, but they still would have come to downtown Tampa on Thursday if it was the Democrats who were holding their national convention here. "But I wouldn't have bought a bracelet," said Tessa, holding up a string of Hawaiian Kukui nuts painted red, white and blue and with GOP logos on them. The FishHawk Ranch couple came to Channelside in downtown Tampa to check out the last day of the RNC. They said they wished there were a few more events going on, although they did get on camera in the background of a live MSNBC show filming there. "We weren't crazy, we were just Facebooking, 'look now, we're on TV!' " Tessa said. Scott, who works in private equity, said they didn't encounter much traffic on the …
