Marine Capt. Esteban Jimenez ended his 48-hour journey with hugs from his family, first from his wife and preschool son at the Tampa International Airport, and then with his daughters at FishHawk Creek Elementary School in Lithia.
Jennifer Jimenez was in her cleaning clothes when she got the call at her home in FishHawk Ranch. It was her husband, calling today, "I'm at the airport, pick me up." The call came Sept. 18, a day earlier than Jennifer Jimenez had expected and, for her husband, Esteban, about 48 hours after he first boarded a plane for his journey home to Tampa. With the couple's youngest son by her side, Jennifer met her husband at the airport, then drove to the MacDill Air Force Base, where Esteban Jiminez dropped off his weapons. Next stop: FishHawk Creek Elementary School, where the couple's two daughters, fourth-grader Analisa and kindergartener Isbella, were summoned to the office for an early dismissal. Six FishHawk area schools recently received more than $19,000 in proceeds from the 14th annual FishHawk Ranch Road Race. Bevis Elementary, FishHawk Creek Elementary, Stowers Elementary, Randall Middle, Barrington Middle and Newsome High each received checks for more than $3,000. In addition, the FishHawk Road Runners Club received $1,000 to provide scholarships to local students. Earlier this year, nearly 1,000 runners competed in a 5k race, which has raised more than $200,000 for various local charities since 1997.

It’s time to put on your tennis shoes, stretch those muscles, and get ready to run for a great cause. The 14th Annual FishHawk Ranch Road Race, which benefits community schools, is scheduled for Saturday Feb. 5. The annual race consists of three races allowing for runners of all levels. A 5K and 10K timed race will commence from Park Square at 8 a.m. and a kids race will begin at 9:30am. “There are two kids races – one for the very little ones that is about fourth mile, and another for the older children which is 1 mile. All participants receive a medal at the finish line,” Lynda McMorrow, the Newland Communities marketing coordinator, stated.
