FIRST LEGO League teams will battle it out at the Brandon campus of Hillsborough Community College.
Challenged to seek solutions to problems facing senior citizens, children ages 9 to 14 will gather at the Brandon campus of Hillsborough Community College Saturday, Dec. 8 for the Suncoast FIRST LEGO League Tournament. The tournament will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the conference center at HCC, 10414 Columbus Dr., Tampa. The theme of this year's tournament is "Senior Solutions." The competition requires teams to partner with a senior citizen over the age of 60 and research innovative solutions to obstacles that keep seniors from having quality and engaging lifestyles in their communities. Sixteen teams from throughout Tampa Bay also will compete in a 2 ½-minute robot challenge, seeking to earn as many points as possible. Team robots are …

Desh Bagley never thought she'd host a tournament for the First Lego League, nevermind her third annual. On Jan. 7, the owner of Tech Playzone in Riverview will once again host a First Lego League tournament, a clash of young minds given the task of applying science, engineering and math to solve a common problem using pieces provided by Lego. "This is a great way for us at Tech Playzone to give back to the community," Bagley said. "If someone had ever told me I'd be hosting my third tournament I'd have said they were joking. But we need more tournaments in the Tampa Bay area and once (Hillsborough Community College) stepped up to partner with us, it became a reality." This whiz kid leads the Tech Playzone Energy Elites First Lego League (FLL) Robotics Team
Graham Peterson is the technical lead for the TechPlayzone Energy Elites First Lego League (FLL) Robotics Team in Riverview. This FLL season, the team won first place in Technial Design at Regional Tournament in January at Hillsborough High School. The team went on to State Championship in Melbourne and won second place overall at State for Research and Presentation. Last year they won first place at State for Research and Presentation. This year, the team's research topic was Multiple Sclerosis. Graham suggested making a device to help patients with MS because his dad has MS. The team went to the MS Society in Tampa, visited with a MS support group at the Brandon Regional Library, met with staff at the University of South Florida and …
