A food pantry that provides for the area's neediest residents now has a need of its own. The Seeds of Hope food pantry, which previously operated out of Lamb of God Lutheran Church in Lithia, is seeking a new home. The nonprofit food pantry was founded last year by FishHawk Ranch resident Leda Eaton as an offshoot of the community's annual FishHawk Turkey Trot 5K run, which takes place each Thanksgiving Day. "I was looking for a way for my kids to earn meaningful services hours," said Eaton. "They were on the cross-country team at Newsome High School and I remembered turkey trots when I lived in West Virginia so I suggested we do a turkey trot here." That was four years ago. "The first year, I was expecting maybe 100 people. We had 450 and…

Both the Greater Brandon and Greater Riverview chambers of commerce were on hand Sept. 28 to cut the ribbon for the long-awaited client service center.
Volunteers, supporters and clients were in attendance Sept. 28 at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Emergency Care Help Organization's new Client Services Center. Currently, ECHO, a nonprofit organization, serves more than 11,000 people annually, helping out with food, clothes and furnishings on an emergency basis for up to four times in a person's lifetime. Now, with the opening of the client service center at 507 N. Parsons Ave., Stacey Efaw, executive director of ECHO, said ECHO will be able to meet all of the needs of an individual living through tough times. The vision was "to have a one-stop place in Brandon to help them here or to guide them to the exact place they need to go," said Efaw. "We can give them food and clothing, but …

Food donations at the annual Park Square concert series totaled more than two tons.
Thousands of residents and concertgoers contributed more than 1,600 pounds of nonperishable food and nearly $700 to Feeding America Tampa Bay during FishHawk Ranch’s Concerts for a Cause throughout the past two months. These donations are equivalent to nearly 2.25 tons of food and total more than 3,600 meals. “This level of generosity surpassed our goal and last year’s total by more than a ton,” said Pam Parisi, director of marketing for Newland Communities. “This is the type of kindness and collaboration that we strive for in our communities.” Newland Communities, developer of FishHawk Ranch, put on the eight concerts free of charge for the public and only asked for a voluntary nonperishable donation in lieu of an admissions fee. “The …

In partnership with Feeding America Tampa Bay, Bloomingdale-Riverview Patch and its 18 sister sites are kicking off the Give-A-Ton Food Drive to benefit our friends and neighbors throughout the area.
Nearly 20 percent of Tampa Bay area residents go to bed wondering where their next meal will come from. Some 30 percent of children struggle with hunger. Those figures come from Feeding America Tampa Bay, which is a regional food bank that supplies more than 700 agencies throughout West Central Florida with the food their clients need to survive. According to Debbi McCarthy, director of development for Feeding America Tampa Bay, the agency serves a poverty population of some 700,000 people. “Florida is ranked fourth in the nation for family hunger in households containing at least one child,” McCarthy said. “In the past 12 months, the food bank supplied more than 2 million pounds of food to its 10-county service area – enough to provide …
