Cruise for Kids Motorcyle Run Starts Today in Brandon

The 2013 Cruise for Kids Motorcycle Run kicks off today, May 19, in Brandon, at the Brandon Haley Davidson on State Road 60, with Uncle Mike's Smokehouse Grill set to serve a pre-registration breakfast.

  A busy weekend in the Greater Brandon area is wrapping up, with the ninth annual Cruise for Kids Motorcyle Poker Run, with registration at Brandon Harley Davidson on State Road 60 in Brandon. Busch Gardens Debuts New Show

If you love the movie “Madagascar” and its sequels, then Busch Gardens has a show for you. Its premier continues today, May 19, with dance parties, character meet-and-greets and Jack Hanna.

  Alex the Lion, Gloria the Hippo and King Julien take a vacation adventure at Busch Gardens in the 20-minute musical stage show, Madagascar Live! Operation: Vacation, which debuts on the Stanleyville Theater on May 18 and 19. “We are thrilled to partner with DreamWorks Animation to bring the hugely popular Madagascar characters to Busch Gardens,” said Jim Dean, park president, in an event announcement. He noted tha the show "is certain to have families engaged and amused and will round out the triple play of amazing shows, thrilling rides and unique animal encounters that our park delivers.” To celebrate the start of the show, the park will host a party at Stanleyville Theater May 18 and 19 with on-the-hour dancing and meet-and-greets …

Cooking Up Crawfish at FishHawk

The FishHawk Riverview Rotary Club will present its third annual Crawfish Festival in Park Square in FishHawk Ranch today, May 18, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival will feature more than 2,500 pounds of steamed crawfish fresh from Louisiana.

Brandon Chamber's Signature Event Today

Celebrating its 25th year, the Brandon Business Expo and Taste of Brandon returns to the Florida State Fairgrounds today, May 16.

  The Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce has been busy promoting its signature event, which this year celebrates its 25th year. The Brandon Business Expo and Taste of Brandon is scheduled for today, May 16, at the Florida State Fairgrounds, from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Recognizing the quarter-century milestone, chamber officials have beeen posting blogs on its Web site , including one that takes a look back at the "big hair" and "shoulder pads" that were all the rage when the event in 1989 "welcomed its very first guests through the doors of the Sheraton Tampa East Hotel. Race for Mayor Heats Up in Brandon

The 2013 race for honorary mayor of Brandon kicks off in June as a charity event run by the Community Roundtable, the folks behind the annual Greater Brandon Fourth of July Parade. So far, four candidates have announced their intentions to run.

  This year's race for honorary mayor of Brandon is already creating a buzz, with a field of four candidates, which is the biggest lineup in recent memory. As excited for the race this year as she was when she won the charity fundraising contest in 2008 is Tammy Holmberg, who has been working hard to create a community of past mayors in support of each year's candidates. Toward that end, the group is hosting a movie night June 11 at AMC The Regency 20 in support of this year's candidates: Jack Bartlett, Pearl Chiarenza, Dawn Galia and Grita Perry, who is running for a mayor repeat, having held the position in 2002. Plan Ahead for 'Brighton Beach Memoirs'

Opening in May at the James McCabe Theater in Valrico is the Village Players production of the Neil Simon classic, "Brighton Beach Memoirs."

  Actors are in costume for the final days of rehearsals for the upcoming Village Players production of Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs. The show features a cast of seven: Vince Evangelista (Eugene Morris Jerome), Isabella Fraraccio (Laurie), Hal Granholm (Jack Jerome), Jonathan Hogsett (Stanley Jerome), Sara Horrocks (Nora), Denise Mesina (Aunt Blanche) and Theresa Miller (Kate Jerome). Cancer Fighter Benefit: From Bloomingdale High to Beef's

The Beef 'O' Brady's Bell Shoals family is cooking up a weekend of support for a young father who's facing a second fight against cancer. It starts with a student-faculty basketball game tonight, May 10, at Bloomingdale High.

  The Bloomingdale community is invited this weekend to help support a young father and his family get through a second bout with cancer, starting with a student-faculty basektball game at Bloomingdale High School tonight, May 10, followed by a host of activites at the Beef 'O' Brady's on Bell Shoals Road in Valrico. There, on Saturday, May 11, a yard sale begins at 7 a.m., followed by family friendly activities starting at around noon, including a bouncy house, cotton candy and face-painting stations for kids.   Where, and how, should local residents celebrate Cinco de Mayo? These photographs give testament to the advertising under way for the holiday that celebrates the Mexican army's 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War, according to History.com. Noted as "a relatively minor holiday in Mexico," the report addresses how in the United States, "Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations." Why Michael Broussard is Psyched To Cook 2,500 Pounds of Crawfish

Michael Broussard is getting set to cook 2,500 pounds of crawfish his parents are bringing to FishHawk "straight out of a swamp in Louisiana."

  Rotarian Michael Broussard is getting set to cook up another batch of crawfish for an annual event that draws more than 1,000 people to FishHawk in May. Following the April 29 meeting of the FishHawk-Riverview Rotary Club, Broussard talked about his role in the upcoming, Crawfish Festival at FishHawk Ranch. This year the festival is scheduled to run Saturday, May 18, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. "From pond to park" is how Broussard describes his club's major fundraiser, in reference to the 2,500 pounds of crawfish his parents will be driving to Lithia the day before the festival, "straight out of a swamp in Louisiana." Broussard's job is to cook the crawfish — which comes from a wholesale company his high school classmate owns — and for that …
