"We need volunteers at the Seffner, Valrico, Brandon and Riverview post offices," she said. The food drive, she added, "gives us about at least half of the food we need for the year." Last year, about 80,000 pounds of food was collected locally during the one-day food drive, which is billed as "the largest one-day food drive in the nation and probably the world," according to notice of the event on the United States Postal Service's Web site. ECHO Grows With Client Service Center

A September ribbon-cutting is planned for the client service center at the Emergency Care Help Organization in Brandon. A room that once housed metal shelving for boxes of food is now a fashionable workspace for meeting the comprehensive needs of clients.

It's been a long time coming, but Stacey Efaw, director of the Emergency Care Help Organization in Brandon, never doubted that the newly opened ECHO Client Service Center would, indeed, open its doors. To celebrate that crowning achievement of a 25-year mission, volunteers, supporters and clients will be in attendance at the center's ribbon-cutting Sept. 28. There, starting at 3 p.m., a town will celebrate another grand step forward in the ECHO undertaking, started as a community mission to feed and clothe neighors who fall on tough times because of emergency situations. "My vision was to have a one-stop place in Brandon to help them here or to guide them to the exact place they need to go," Efaw said. "We can give them food and clothing…

Children Shine at ECHO Fashion Show

Organizers hope to raise $18,000 to purchase underwear, diapers and clothes for needy residents.

For the kids participating in the ninth annual Kids Helping Kids fashion show to benefit the Brandon Emergency Care Clinic, it's all about the fashions and chance to strut their stuff on the runway. But, for Cami Gibertini of Valrico, who's been involved in the fashion show as model coordinator and chairwoman all nine years, there's a more important reason for this year's 45 models to participate in the fashion show. "While they're dressing up and having a great time, they're learning how to give back to their community, something I hope they continue doing the rest of their lives," said Gibertini, who also sits on the board of ECHO and is the 2011-12 honorary mayor of Brandon. "They're learning an important life lesson about giving to …

So how did she come up with the unique fundraising idea? “It’s one of the classes that I take every week at the Y and, when I decided to run for honorary mayor, I decided to incorporate some of the things that I like to do into the race,” Gibertini said. “Fitness is a big part of my life and a lot of people who take the class are supporting me so it should be fun.” While she would love to ride in Brandon’s July 4th parade as mayor, Gibertini said the race …
