Celebrating its 25th year, the Brandon Business Expo and Taste of Brandon returned to the Florida State Fairgrounds on May 16, presented by the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce.
More than 1,000 people had their taste buds tickled May 16 at the Brandon Business Expo and Taste of Brandon, presented by the Greater Brandon Chambr of Commerce at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa. The event, in its 25 year, featured local restaurants vying for the Best Taste award, an expo tradition. Cheddar’s Casual Café took home the award with the Tampa Bay Times winning for Best Booth and Bahama Breeze Island Grille winning Best Dessert. “It is a great event,” said Brandon’s Gerard Abbett, about the expo and taste that drew about 1500 people and more than 150 exhibitors. “I got about one-third of the way around and had to take a break for an hour because I was full.” Adam Hunt of Hunt Family Dental Care brought his entire …

The Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce has been busy promoting its signature event, which this year celebrates its 25th year. The Brandon Business Expo and Taste of Brandon is scheduled for today, May 16, at the Florida State Fairgrounds, from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Recognizing the quarter-century milestone, chamber officials have beeen posting blogs on its Web site , including one that takes a look back at the "big hair" and "shoulder pads" that were all the rage when the event in 1989 "welcomed its very first guests through the doors of the Sheraton Tampa East Hotel. Riverview High School Principal Robert "Bob" Heilmann acknowledged at the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce luncheon this week that his school, indeed, has had many accolades and accomplishments. As principal, he added, "I just drive the bus," after which he applauded the work of teachers, students, parents, coaches, school administrators and groups and organizations, including Angela Slater, who this year registered her 500th win as a high school softball coach in Hillsborough County. Riverview High School teacher Angela Slater was recognized at the April 2013 Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce meeting for her 500th win as a softball coach in Hillsborough County.
Angela Slater was one of the many people singled out at the April 23 membership luncheon of the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce, sponsored by the Riverview High School Athletic Booster Club. Slater's claim to fame is that this year she won her 500th victory as a softball coach in Hillsborough County, where she has been teaching for 28 years, including the first 13 at Brandon High and the next 15 at Riverview. The milestone win came March 26 at East Bay High School, where the Riverview Sharks, trailing with two outs in the final inning, scored a 9-6 victory after a three-run homer by Jordan Phillips. After living by the adage, "just hang in there," Darren Dennington is ready to "raise the bar" — again. At the 2013 annual membership dinner of the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce, the newly installed chairman of the group's board of directors paid homage to the past as he put forth his views of the post-meltdown economy. About 12 years ago, he noted, at a chamber meeting, then chair George May urged the group to "raise the bar." "Those were great words that challenged the group to to do our very best," said Dennington, who owns the Copper Bell Cafe in Riverview and restaurant and consulting businesses. Some 400 members and guests of the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce met Friday, Feb. 1, at The Regent in Riverview, where Darren Dennington took the gavel as this year's chairman of the business networking group. Also announced at this year's dinner were the newly named recipients of the annual Key Citizen of the Year and Greater Brandon Community Leadership awards. Last year's honorees, Tammy Holmberg and Earl Lennard, respectively, announced this year's recipients, Susan Saunders and Rich Glorioso, respectively.
