Dot Mahieu of Bloomingdale died at the age of 84.
A memorial service took place Tuesday, May 22, for Dorothy (Dot) Mahieu, of Bloomingdale who died May 16 at the age of 84. Mahieu managed the Pat's Corner Gift Shop at Center Place, 619 Vonderburg Dr., Brandon, for a number of years and was a longtime patron of the nonprofit cultural arts and civic center. She also was a longtime member of the Newcomers Club of Brandon. In 2011, she was awarded Center Place's S.L. "Spud" Clements Award for her dedication to Center Place during the nonprofit's annual Arts Gala. As she walked up to accept the award, she was greeted with a standing ovation. Diamari Christensen of Valrico will display her eclectic style in a collection she calls "Journey."
Valrico artist and muralist Diamari Christensen is displaying her eclectic works of art in an exhibit titled "Journey" in the Mook Gallery at Center Place, 619 Vonderburg Dr., Brandon, during the month of December. Residents are invited to meet the artist and explore her works during an artist reception Thursday, Dec. 8, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The exhibit features works Christensen did while attending school as well as more recent paintings. There's simply too many venues for residents to take in on one day. That's why the fourth annual Gallery Hop is scheduled over two days this year, said Anne Drewry, president of the Greater Brandon Arts Council. The council, along with Center Place and the Brandon League of Fine Arts, will host this year's Gallery Hop Sept. 9-10, featuring 12 venues throughout greater Brandon that focus on the arts. "This event has proven very successful," said Drewry. "Last year, we had over 200 people gather at Center Place for the closing reception, and we're planning for an even bigger crowd this year." A steady stream of visitors came to see the show at Center Place's Mook Gallery.
Twenty-two local artists had works on display at Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Center, 619 Vonderburg Dr., Brandon, on Saturday, Aug. 6. There was no prizes involved because it wasn't a judged show. The artists were to there sell their work and to promote the local art community in what the organizer, the Brandon League of Fine Arts, hopes will become an annual event called the Stay Cool Indoor Artfest. Many mediums — oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel paintings, photography and even quilts — were represented. Each artist had different inspirations for their work.
