Following the Sandy Creek Elementary School shooting, gun store owners are reporting an increase in gun sales by people anticipating more firearms restrictions.
Visiting several gun shops in the area Thursday, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Detective Larry McKinnon said the scene was reminiscent of “Home Depot just before a hurricane.” At Shoot Straight on U.S. 301 in Tampa, customers anticipating tighter gun control restrictions crowded into the gun store in the hopes of purchasing a weapon. “Guns are flying off the shelves,” said McKinnon. “People are worried everything will be locked down.” Dr. Richard Kane, owner of Care Animal Hospital on Bloomingdale Avenue, said he waited an hour at Shoot Straight to purchase clips for his handgun only to discover the gun store was out of his ammunition. He headed to Smooth Action Firearms, 833 W. Bloomingdale Ave., Brandon, hoping for …

Now at the Care Animal Hospital in Brandon, the 4-year-old Chihuahua-whippet spent the first two years of his life with the Baetge family in West Sacramento. Found two years later some 3,000 miles away in Florida, Cooper's past two years are a mystery.
Two years and several thousand miles later, a 17-pound Chihuahua-whippet is heading for home. How Cooper made his way to Brandon, Fla., is a mystery not yet solved. Nor might it ever be. But it matters little to a family in Sacramento, Calif., and to the workers at the Care Animal Hospital in Brandon, where Cooper was taken after two girls spotted him walking down Bryan Road in a downpour. “The girls found him a week ago Thursday,” said Kendra Waters, in an interview from the animal hospital, at 511 E. Bloomingdale Ave., on Oct. 1. “They picked him up and brought him to us and we scanned him for a microchip.” Inserted under the skin of the 4-year-old dog was a HomeAgain microchip, which led to the dog’s prior owners, the Baetge family of …

A kitten found in a rhinoceros pen almost two months ago was released from Care Animal Hospital to the zoo trainer who adopted him. Maura Middleton, an elephant and rhinoceros trainer at the Lowry Park Zoo, was working in the rhinoceros exhibit when she noticed a baby kitten among the straw. The kitten was named Rhino and taken to the zoo vet and then onto Florida Veterinary Specialists for immediate help. For ongoing care, Middleton took Rhino to Care Animal Hospital, 511 E.
