YMCA to Host 12-Week Program for Cancer Survivors

The YMCA will kick off Livestrong at the YMCA Week May 17.

Cancer survivors and their families are invited to get fit during a free 12-week program at all Tampa YMCA branches including the Campo Family YMCA, 3414 Culbreath Rd., Valrico. From Friday, May 17through Sunday, May 26, the YMCAs will celebrate cancer survivors in the community as well as raise awareness about the Livestrong at the YMCA program with story boards, graduation ceremonies and special guest speakers. The Livestrong at the YMCA program is a free 12-week program for cancer survivors and their family members. The research-based program offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. Cancer Survivors Gain Strength at Campo Family YMCA Program

The Cancer Survivor Program at the Campo Family YMCA in Valrico offers a free program for cancer fighters.

  Steve Morrow is a big, strong guy who battles a formidable foe — cancer. At a recent meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Brandon, he talked about his cancer fight, and the strength he found at the Campo Family YMCA in Valrico. "I like to say, 'I lost my leg but I won the war," said Morrow, a two-time cancer survivor. "It's a tough road, but luckily I have my wife, my family, behind me." So, too, the Cancer Survivor Program at the Campo Family YMCA on Culbreath Road in Valrico, where Morrow has been an active participant. YMCA Invites Kids to Get Healthy

The Campo Family YMCA will host Be Healthy Kids Week Sept. 24-27.

The Campo Family YMCA, 3414 Culbreath Rd., Valrico, will host "Be Healthy Kids Week" Sept. 24-27 from 4 to 8 p.m. Kids throughout the area are invited to visit the Y for a week of educational speakers, healthy events and fun classes. YMCA Gets Healthier Vending Machines

HUMAN (Helping Unite Mankind and Nutrition) vending machines have replaced traditional machines in Tampa area YMCAs.

Campo Family YMCA members now have more nutritious options when it comes to refreshments. Vending machines at Tampa-area YMCA locations were recently replaced with HUMAN (Helping Unite Mankind and Nutrition) vending machines that are said to offer the healthiest options when it comes to snacks and beverges. The white and green machines help promote a “5-2-1-almost none philosophy,” according to Kathy Rabon, vice president of development and communications for the Tampa-area YMCA organization. The philosophy calls for children and families to, each day, eat five servings of fruits or vegetables, spend less than two hours of time in front of the TV, get one hour of exercise and have almost no sugary beverages. “All soda and non-healthy snack…

Campo Y Introduces Infant Swim Program

The program is designed to teach children age 6 months to 6 years how to survive in the water.

News Report Hillsborough County leads the nation is drowning deaths of children under 4. This is a statistic the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA is committed to changing. The program, Infant Swimming Resource (ISR), is designed for children 6 months to 6 years old and teaches them how to survive should they fall into a pool or other body of water.  ISR was founded by Harvey Barnett, Ph.D, in 1966 after he discovered a neighbor’s 9-month-old child in a nearby creek. This experience with the devastating effects of a drowning on a family and community caused Barnett, a behavioral scientist, to adapt his theoretical knowledge of learning to pioneer the ISR Self-Rescue method. FANG's Back-To-School Festival at the Campo Y (PHOTOS)

The 10th annual Back-To-School Festival at the Campo Family YMCA in the Greater Brandon community of Valrico drew a strong crowd for vendors treats and showcases. The event is sponsored by FANG, the FishHawk Area Networking Group.

  Supporting children from low-income families with school supplies and backpacks was the mission behind the grand networking event held Aug. 5 at the Campo Family YMCA in the Greater Brandon community of Valrico. There, the FishHawk Area Networking Group, or FANG, hosted its 10th Annual Back-To-School Festival, featuring a strong crowd of attendees visiting with vendor booths and watching dance and judo peformances. This gallery of photos gives testament to the day's events. Backpacks and school supplies will be distributed to registered families at the YMCA's Camp Christina on Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in an event sponsored by both the Y and the Emergency Care Help Organization (ECHO) of Brandon.

FishHawk Area Networking Group Hosts Back-To-School Bash Today

The Campo Family YMCA on Culbreath Road in Valrico is the site for today's 10th Annual FANG back-to-school festival. The Aug. 5 event kicks off at 1 p.m.

  The 10th Annual FishHawk Area Networking Group (FANG) Back-to-School Festival runs today, Aug. 5, at the Campo Family YMCA gymnasium, featuring more than 100 local business booths, demonstrations, giveaways, doors prizes and samplings from 10 area restaurants. The grand event opens at 1 p.m. and runs for three hours. The event is held each year to collect back-to-school supplies for children from migrant families. Campo Odyssey of the Mind Team Heads to World Finals

The team is in the process of raising funds for the trip to the University of Iowa for the World Finals.

A little duct tape, hot glue, cardboard and paint combined with a lot of creativity have landed the Odyssey of the Mind team from the Campo Family YMCA a trip to World Finals. In April, the Odyssey of the Mind team sponsored by the YMCA placed first in the statewide Odyssey of the Mind competition at the University of Central Florida. Now the team is headed to the University of Iowa in Ames, Iowa, May 23, to compete against teams from around the world. Odyssey of the Mind is a competition in which teams of students solve problems in creative ways by writing and performing skits. Teams get a budget of just $125 to design and create their scenery, props and costumes. The Campo Family YMCA team decided on a humorous solution for this year’s …
