Coping with the fear that comes with a diagnosis of breast cancer is overwhelming by itself. But then comes to treatment and the inevitable toll it takes on the body -- mastectomies, hair loss, skin damage. "Not only do women have to deal with they diagnosis but they can feel unattractive and lose their self-confidence," said Diane Gill of Brandon. That's where Gill steps in. For 15 years, the licensed cosmetologist has been helping cancer patients deal with the appearance-related side effects of treatment through the Southeast Hillsborough Unit of the American Cancer Society's Look Good...Feel Better program. Held the last Wednesday of the month from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the cancer society office, 1462 Oakfield Dr., Brandon, the program …

A New You Pink Boutique is hosting a Bahamas cruise to benefit the Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute.
Breast cancer may be an ugly disease. But, as far as sisters Lisa and Carol Poole of Brandon are concerned, there's no reason for breast cancer patients to feel unattractive while they're fighting the disease. Lisa Poole, who is waging her own battle against breast cancer, was headed to a fitting for a prosthesis in Clearwater when she mentioned to her sister that she wished there was a place for breast cancer patients closer to home. After doing some research, the Pooles decided to open A New You Pink Boutique, 106 W. Robertson St., Brandon, in November 2011 to meet the needs of local women battling breast cancer. In the year since the boutique opened, it's not only become a resource for women with breast cancer but offers a support …
The three day Project Cure walk will take place Oct. 26-28.
I’ll confess, when it comes to breast cancer, my journalistic objectivity flies right out the window. I’ve lost four dear friends to this horrendous disease, and watched as others suffered the ill effects of radiation, chemotherapy and surgery. So I’m always more than willing to share the stories of the brave women who battle breast cancer as well as the friends and families who work tirelessly to raise funds for research. One of those stories revolves around a group of mothers whose children attended St. Stephen Catholic School in Riverview. Six years ago, after two mother in one class died of breast cancer, Lisa Huetteman, Amy Meany, Mary Owens, Ivette Wagner and Jean Weber (OK, I’ll admit I was involved as well) decided to do more than…

Tears flowed as the daughters of Antionette Cuellar recalled their mother's giving spirit, her zest for life and her steadfast determination to beat the cancer that, nevertheless, took her life in May at the age of 48. The daughters' comments were followed by a rendition of Cuellar's favorite song, "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus, and the release of white doves in her honor. It was an appropriate remembrance for the woman who participated in and was the spokeswomen for the annual Plaza Bella Goes Pink walk. Although Cuellar was not physically present at this year's fifth annual walk on Saturday, Oct. 20, Plaza Bella Goes Pink founder, Roz Creager, owner of The Green Boutique, said she could fill her spirit with them. Friends and family members …

Breast cancer isn't age specific. Here's how to cope with treatments and augmentations if you are diagnosed earlier in life.
Generally speaking, a woman in Florida has a 114 in 100,000 chance of getting breast cancer, according to this breast cancer statistics chart from komen.org. An American woman in her 30s has a one in 232 chance of getting the disease, and a woman 20 years her senior has a one in 42 probability, according to the website. “Although we aren’t certain, the cause of breast cancer in younger women is likely caused by a genetic predisposition,” says Ann H. Partridge, M.D., M.P.H., the medical oncologist director of the Adult Survivorship Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. While breast cancer treatment in young women is often effective, the chance of recovery tends to be worse in women under 40. Breast tissue…

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which means a variety of pink products are hitting the shelves. But, do your pink purchases always go toward the cause?
A wave of pink is flooding stores everywhere, as retailers participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For the savvy shopper, it's an opportunity to donate to a good cause while snagging unique, pink-hued items. But before you plunk down your green for some pink, the nonprofits behind Breast Cancer Awareness Month want you to check the label. Jenna Glazer, director of development for Young Survival Coalition (YSC), a global organization dedicated to helping young women who are diagnosed with breast cancer, said buyers should be on the lookout for a label or tag that tells where the money from the purchase goes. "If you walk into Bed Bath & Beyond and see something with a pink ribbon and no information about where the money is going, …
