Not All Discipline is Good Discipline

Think twice before you raise your hand as a training technique.

I recently went to watch the sunset on the beach and, as I was sitting there, a voice behind me caught my attention. I turned around and saw a couple with a dog on the bench.   I really didn’t mind that they brought their dog, since I am a huge dog lover, and technically they were not on the beach. I was more concerned with what I had just heard. The male had just said to his dog, “Sit! … Did you hear me? I said sit!”  At first, I found this humorous because I think is a natural human tendency to talk to our dogs like humans and we really believe they understand. I started thinking about how I talk to my dog, Kaiah, and I realized I do it also. I will actually ask her questions such as, “Are you in the kitchen?” Now she may only understand…

County to Celebrate Older Americans Month

Hillsborough County will honor senior citizens in May.

May is Older Americans Month, and Hillsborough County’s Department of Family and Aging Services will join the rest of the nation in celebrating and honoring our older adults. This year’s theme is Older Americans: Connecting the Community.   Older adults are the roots from which our community grows. They bestow gifts of wisdom and insight upon younger generations, and they strengthen the bonds between neighbors to create a better place to live.
