Ellen Kleinschmidt, who teaches music at Reddick Elementary and got her community theater start on the Riverview Little Theatre stage, has been named a "woman of distinction" by the American Association of University Women.
When Ellen Kleinschmidt received the call this month that she was named a "woman of distinction" by the American Association of University Women, she wasn't quite sure what to make of it. "I thought, 'This is quite an honor, but what is it?' " Kleinschmidt said. Then she learned it was on the up-and-up, that she was one of three local women pegged for this year's award, which recognizes "women who have made a difference in their career and their community," and she was humbled. "It was unexpected and very lovely," Kleinschmidt said. "To be recognized for being a teacher of the arts says something about the group, that they still recognize the arts in school as being very important. The Riverview Idol contest at Riverview High School returns for a second round Tuesday, March 5. See who advanced to the Top 10 round of competition.
Ten singers have advanced to the second round of 2013 Riverview Idol competition after performing with 15 of their peers at Riverview High School on Tuesday, Feb. 26. In all, about 45 students had auditioned to compete for a Top 25 spot. Jeremy Rosado of Valrico, cheered on by the Greater Brandon community in his 2012 run for the American Idol crown, is set to judge the final round of the Riverview Idol contest, March 19. Named at the Community Roundtable's 2013 Community Affairs Dinner were this year's Alice B. Tompkins Community Service Award, Non-Profit of the Year and Maureen Krzanowski Scholarship honorees.
The Community Roundtable held its annual dinner Feb. 20 and announced this year’s Non-Profit Organization of the Year, the Alice B. Tompkins Community Award recipient and the Maureen Krzanowski Scholarship recipient. The top non-profit award, along with a $500 check, went to the GFWC Brandon Service League, founded in 1959 by Alice B. Storms. This year’s Alice B. Tompkins Community Service Award recipient is Betty Jo Tompkins, a long-time community advocate and supporter, who has volunteered tirelessly over the years for many groups and organizations. Also at the Community Affairs Dinner, Strawberry Crest High School senior Zora Millerleile received the Maureen Krzanowski Scholarship. The award is given in memory of the Roundtable’s …
