Relay's Aim: 'To Get Rid of Cancer Forever'

Volunteers at the 2013 Bloomingdale Relay For Life talk about the cause that drives them to raise funds and awareness to rid the world of cancer.

Kailey Carpenter knows without hesitation why she stayed overnight at Bloomingdale High School with her parents this weekend, "to create some of awareness," she said, "and to get rid of cancer forever." Carpenter, with her parents Deborah and Brian, were among the hundreds of cancer survivors and volunteers at the 2013 Bloomingdale Relay For Life. "I hope no one has to deal with cancer again," said Kailey Carpenter, a senior, whose father, Brian, is a kidney cancer survivor. "It's a terrible thing to go through." Indeed, the passion to fight cancer sprang eternal at this year's Relay, as it has throughout Eastern Hillsborough County in this Relay For Life season and in years past. "I'm walking for my grandpa," said Ian Crumpton, band …

Teens, Teams Rally for Relay

The American Cancer Society's 2013 Relay For Life season is under way as local participants prepare for next weekend's overnight fundraiser at Bloomingdale High.

Local teens have been busy in Bloomingdale this week gearing up for the 2013 Relay For Life overnight fundraiser set to begin April 5 at 6 p.m. at Bloomingdale High School. A case in point is "Bloomingdale Fighting Cancer," whose team members were spotted recently in Riverivew, at Moe's Southwest Grill in Winthrop, where they were handing out fundraising sheets to diners, signifying that a portion of their bill would be donated to the cause. "It's fun hanging out with all my members on the team," said Olivia Kelly, a sophomore at Bloomingdale High. "There's always a bunch of activities that go on that make it a lot of fun." With her was classmate Karina Siegel, also a sophomore, who noted that her mother "is in the cancer business." "She…

Youth: 'I Donate My Birthday' to Relay For Life

Days shy of his 13th birthday, Jason Abel donates his birthday gifts and cake to the Riverview Relay For Life. He's been doing it for years.

Jason Abel officially becomes a teenager March 27 and he marked the occasion of his birthday as he has for the past few years, by donating money that would have been spent on his gifts to the American Cancer Society's Riverview Relay For Life. "The last four years he refused any birthday gifts," said David Keplinger, Abel's grandfather. As for the birthday cake? "I buy the cake," said Keplinger's wife, Barbara Jones Keplinger, "and he donates it to the survivors at the Relay." Barbara Keplinger, who has battled thyroid, stomach and cervical cancer, said the boy also grows his hair as long as he can, for Locks for Love, a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and…

Volunteer Helps Cancer Patients 'Look Good, Feel Better'

Diane Gill received national recognition last year for her work helping cancer patients feel good about themselves.

Coping with the fear that comes with a diagnosis of breast cancer is overwhelming by itself. But then comes to treatment and the inevitable toll it takes on the body -- mastectomies, hair loss, skin damage. "Not only do women have to deal with they diagnosis but they can feel unattractive and lose their self-confidence," said Diane Gill of Brandon. That's where Gill steps in. For 15 years, the licensed cosmetologist has been helping cancer patients deal with the appearance-related side effects of treatment through the Southeast Hillsborough Unit of the American Cancer Society's Look Good...Feel Better program. Held the last Wednesday of the month from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the cancer society office, 1462 Oakfield Dr., Brandon, the program …

The latter option requires more risk, more work and more investment, but it has the potential to give you a greater return. You also will have greater control over what you sell and how you sell it. Thanks. Regards, http://weightlosspunch.com/   more ›
