Registration Event Intended to Curb Bike Theft
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office will host a bike registration event and bike light giveaway Jan. 19.
As more and more people purchase bicycles for exercise, recreation and low-cost transportation, the United States has seen a dramatic increase in the number of bike thefts. In the United States between 1992 and 2006, bicycle sales increased from 15.3 million to 18.2 million per year (an increase of roughly 20 percent), according to the Center for Problem-Solving Policing. The National Bike Registry estimates that 1.5 million of those bicycles will be stolen each year. Hillsborough County is no exception when it comes to the increasing popularity of cycling.
