Man Arrested in Attack on Natures Way Joggers

Frank Emmanuel Zuniga was taken into custody around 3:30 p.m. and charged with false imprisonment.

Just five hours after an 18-year-old Bloomingdale East resident reported that she'd been attacked while jogging on Natures Way, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office announced it had made an arrest. And, according to sheriff's spokesman Larry McKinnon, this might not be the suspect's first offense. Sheriff's deputies arrested 27-year-old Frank Emmanuel Zuniga of Valrico and charged him with false imprisonment after a woman reported that, while she and a friend were jogging on Natures Way near Elba Place Thursday, May 23 at 10:32 a.m., a man jumped out of bushes nearby and grabbed her arm. Local Veterans Face Long Waits for VA Benefits

As our armed forces come home from the Middle East, the local Veterans Affairs benefits office is being stretched.

Our veterans are now facing a new enemy at home – long wait times for disability claims. The waiting times started increasing in 2010 when U.S. troops were withdrawn from Iraq, causing a dramatic uptick in first-time filers, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting. The data found that in most regional VA offices, not only did waiting times increase, but they vary dramatically by location: about a year and five months in Baltimore, Maryland compared to four months in Fargo, North Dakota. The national average now stands at about a year and one month, which is dramatically higher than in 2009 when it was four months. Woman Grabbed While Jogging on Natures Way

The man ran away after the woman started screaming.

In the middle of the morning today, a woman and a friend were jogging on Natures Way near Elton Place. That's when a man jumped out of the bushes and grabbed her arm, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. The woman screamed, and the man let go of her. Then he ran away and got into a white pickup truck with a Tampa Bay Buccaneer logo on the rear window, the Sheriff's Office wrote in an email to Patch. The woman called 911 shortly after 10:30 a.m. to report the incident and detectives responded to the scene to collect more information and evidence. Anyone who thinks he may know the man who did this can call the Hillsborogh County Sheriff's Office at 813-247-8200.

Toddler Gets Long-Awaited Kidney Transplant From Mom

Evan Ranieri has just had surgery to receive one of his mother, Melissa's, kidneys.

A little boy who has won the hearts of the community has finally received his life-saving kidney transplant. According to the family of 2-year-old Evan Ranieri, the toddler has just come out of a seven-hour surgery at Tampa General Hospital where he received a kidney donated by his mother, Melissa. His father, Paul, reports that the surgery was successful and Evan is doing well. Evan was born with under-developed kidneys and has required daily dialysis treatments. Doctor James Huang, Tampa General Hospital’s director of renal transplant, performed the surgery. Upon learning about Evan and the enormous medical expenses the family was incurring, the community held several fundraisers for the family, raising more than $56,000. For more …

Lyle Flagg served as principal of Brandon, Armwood and East Bay high schools.

Family, friends and former students are mourning the death of beloved longtime Brandon educator Lyle Flagg, who died Tuesday, May 21 at the age of 85. Born Jan. 13, 1928 to Forrest and Louise Flagg in Fayette, Maine, Flagg served in the Navy during World War II and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Maine. In 1954, he moved his family to Brandon where he served 40 years with the Hillsborough County School System and was a longtime member of Nativity Catholic Church.
