Lisa Minnifield's sisters vow to keep open A New You Pink Boutique in Brandon, founded by Minnifeld to minister to women, young and old, in their battles against breast cancer. She died April 8.
At A New You Pink Boutique in Brandon, the drive to succeed remains as strong as ever despite the April 8 death of its co-founder, Lisa Minnifield. And that's how it should be, said Darlene Gaylord, a banker at the next-door Centre State Bank, where a fund in Minnifield's name has been started, in lieu of funeral flowers. "She was a ball of energy," Gaylord said about Minnifield the business woman, and Minnifield the missionary. "Heaven had to be busy with it when she came through the doors." Former Hillsborough County Administrator Fred Karl died March 7.
Hillsborough County is mourning the loss of one its longstanding leaders today, March 7. Fred Karl, a former county administrator, county attorney, state legislator and Florida Supreme Court justice, was 88. A Daytona native, Karl served as an Army tank commander in World War II and was present at the Battle of the Bulge, according to The Tampa Tribune. His public service career continued long after the war was over. The Stetson Law graduate served in the Florida House from 1956-64 when he attempted a bid for the governor’s office. After that, he ran for the Florida Senate in 1968 and served until 1971, according to web sources. Karl then sat on the Florida Supreme Court from 1977 until 1978 when he opted to go back into private practice. …

Nicholas Aaron Cauble died Feb. 17 at the age of 16.
Funeral services for Nicholas Aaron Cauble of Valrico will take place Saturday, Feb. 23 at 11 a.m. at the Serenity Meadows Funeral Home, 6919 Providence Rd., Riverview. Cauble died Feb. 17 at the age of 16. Born on Sept. 19, 1996 in Bossier City, La., Cauble was a student at Newsome High School. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Larry Cauble. Survivors include his parents, Michael and Tabitha Cauble; brother, Christopher Cauble; sister, Jessica Cauble; maternal grandparents, Tom and Carolyn Simon and Glenn and Cheryl Newsome; paternal grandmother, Janice Beckstead; and his extended family. There will be a visitation on Friday, Feb. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Serenity Meadows Funeral Home.

The director of maintenance for St. Stephen Catholic Church died New Year's Day following a long battle with brain cancer.
Friends and family members will gather at St. Stephen Catholic Church today to bid farewell to parishioner and church maintenance director Patrick W. Albert. Albert died Jan. 1 at the age of 51 following a long battle with brain cancer. A Celebration of Life funeral Mass will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at St. Stephen Church, 5049 Bell Shoals Rd., Valrico. Albert and his family moved to Bloomingdale after his home in New Orleans was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. However, before heading to Florida, Albert assisted in the hurricane relief efforts in his hometown. He was born in New Orleans June 16, 1961, graduated from St. Paul's Catholic High School in Covington, La., and received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from…

Retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, 78, passed away today in Tampa, according to media reports. Schwarzkopf was best known to the American people for his leadership in removing Saddam Hussein and his forces from Kuwait in 1991. Schwarzkopf had successfully led an international coalition of U.S. allies to drive out Iraqi troops. "Barbara and I mourn the loss of a true American patriot and one of the great military leaders of his generation," former President George H.W. Bush said in a written statement, according to ABC News. Schwarzkopf led what came to be known as Operation Desert Storm under President Bush. Walker, a nine-time LPGA Tour winner, died Dec. 11 at her Valrico home.
Longtime Valrico resident and nine-time winner on the LPGA tour, Colleen Walker, died Tuesday at her home following a long battle with cancer. She was 56 years old. Walker was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. Following chemotherapy and radiation, she went into remission but the cancer returned to her hips and pelvis in 2011. Walker, who played on tour from 1982-2004, leaves behind a 16-year-old son, Tyler, and her husband, Ron Bakich. Born in Jacksonville, Walker began golfing at the age of 14. At 18, she was named the 1974 Palm Beach Post Athlete and Player of the Year and she received the Florida All-State Golf Award two years later. She attended Florida State University where she won most valuable player honors from 1977-1978…

The community will pay tribute to a longtime local environmental and political activist during a celebration of life service Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. at Eureka Springs Park. Joyce (Joy) Arleen Newman of Brandon died Saturday, Dec. 1 at the age of 57. Newman, known for her sparkling personality and ever-present smile, was passionate about protecting Florida's precious resources. While serving on the executive committee of the Sierra Club, she was instrumental in saving Cone Ranch public land from development in northern Hillsborough County. She also was a member of the East Hillsborough Democratic Club and was the Florida media liaison in the 2008 Dennis Kucinich presidential campaign. Her dream was to create a National Department of …

A celebration of Andrea Bower's life will take place today at 7 p.m. at Serenity Meadows Funeral Home, 6919 Providence Rd. in Riverview. Bower, a student at Guinta Middle School in Riverview, was killed Nov. 16 while attempting to cross Bloomingdale Avenue to board the school bus at Las Brisas Drive at about 8:30 a.m. Family members describe Bower, nicknamed "Peachie," as a kind, compassionate, free-spirited youngster who wanted to someday travel the world, working for charities and exploring new cultures.
