Race for Mayor Heats Up in Brandon

The 2013 race for honorary mayor of Brandon kicks off in June as a charity event run by the Community Roundtable, the folks behind the annual Greater Brandon Fourth of July Parade. So far, four candidates have announced their intentions to run.

This year's race for honorary mayor of Brandon is already creating a buzz, with a field of four candidates, which is the biggest lineup in recent memory.

As excited for the race this year as she was when she won the charity fundraising contest in 2008 is Tammy Holmberg, who has been working hard to create a community of past mayors in support of each year's candidates.

Toward that end, the group is hosting a movie night June 11 at AMC The Regency 20 in support of this year's candidates: Jack Bartlett, Pearl Chiarenza, Dawn Galia and Grita Perry, who is running for a mayor repeat, having held the position in 2002.

This year's movie night, at AMC The Regency 20 in Brandon, at 2496 West Brandon Blvd., will feature the comedy, The Internship, starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson.

Starting each year in June, candidates for the honorary post host fundraisers for their designated charities.

The candidate who, as of the morning of July 4, has raised the most money is declared Brandon's newest honorary mayor. Proceeds from the fundraisers go to the Community Roundtable and to the candidates' sponsoring organizations and selected charities and not-for-profit organizations.

Here's Holmberg's quick rundown on this year's races:
