Got Big Weekend Plans? Watch the Weather

Rain chances in the Bloomingdale area are high over the weekend, but conditions start to clear out just in time for the workweek to start.

Chantal is down, but she’s not out.

The tropical storm that was is now a large, disorganized low-pressure system hanging around well south of Florida. But, forecasters here say she could have an impact on Tampa Bay weather going into the weekend.

National Weather Service meteorologist Andrew McKaughan said the Tampa Bay area is looking at fairly high rain chances throughout the weekend. The chances of rain are about 50 percent for most of the area Friday, July 12. Those rain chances increase to 60 percent Saturday and Sunday with some areas up to about 70 percent.

Chantal’s proximity “is going to help increase cloud cover and increase moisture in the region,” McKaughan explained. That first part is reasonably good news, he added, because the cloud cover should help keep highs just below the 90 range most of the weekend.

While rain chances are strong throughout the region this weekend, McKaughan says it shouldn’t be a total washout.

“We’re not expecting it to be a major rain event,” he said. “We’re not going to see quite as much rain as we saw (at the start of the month).”

Looking into the week ahead, McKaughan said Monday should bring a return of normal afternoon storms with a chance of rain around 40 percent.

Chantal’s remnants are located near Cuba and are no longer considered organized enough to warrant a name. Even so, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center say there’s a 30 percent chance the storm could reform into an organized system.
