Newsome High Hosts 2nd Annual Football Camp

Heavy rain from a previous day may have dampened the field, but not the spirit of the students.

The weather could not be more perfect to play Florida football. It was a beautiful blue sky, with a few overhead clouds and the right amount of humidity level in the air.

Even a soggy football field from a heavy rain almost 24 hours before did not affect the players' enthusiasm.

Joe E. Newsome High School football camp was created by head coach Kenneth Hiscock and his coaching staff a few years ago. On Monday, opening day. there are 30 players arriving on the field before 9 a.m.

The football camp is designed to "give kids strong experience to fundamental football and a taste of what it's like to play a higher level football," said Newsome football defensive back/special teams coordinator, Coach Tony West. "It's also good for a first-timer because they'd be taught properly," he said.

"It's good!," said Spencer Preston, an incoming Newsome freshman. "I'm going to Newsome and might come back either as a coach or player next year." Either way, Preston said he'll be back at the next camp.

Another student concurred with Preston.

"I think it's good, hard work" said Tyberious Correa of Boyette Springs Elementary School who plays quarterback and linebacker positions. "I learned some plays, how to warm up my arms and mostly how to play football," he said.

When asked whether the camp should be extended longer than three days, Hiscock said, "A three-day camp is enough for players and coaching staff. If it goes on too long and too much, the kids will forget the basics."

Newsome High School offers two football camps in the summer. The first camp opens two weeks after school ends in June and the second is in the week following the July 4th holiday. This year it ran from July 11-13. The registration was $125 per student.
