County Commission to Present Commendation to Olympic Diver Chris Colwill

County Commissioner Al Higginbotham will make the presentation Saturday at the Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center.

Hillsborough County Commissioner Al Higginbotham will present a commendation on behalf of the Board of County Commissioners to Olympian Chris Colwill at the Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center on Saturday, Oct. 13.

Brandon native Colwill, whose parents Chuck and Debbie live in Southoak in south Brandon, started diving in 1990 at the Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center. He attended Tampa Preparatory School and went on to join the swimming and diving team at the University of Georgia. He participated in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and the 2012 Olympics in London.

Colwill will conduct free diving clinics at the aquatic center, 405 Beverly Dr., Brandon, on Saturday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. to noon for interested divers in the community. Immediately following the clinic, Higginbotham will present the commendation to Colwill.

Having officially retired after the summer games in London, Colwill will develop the Blue Wave diving program at the Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center in March.

“I am so proud to commend an outstanding athlete who calls Brandon home,” said Higginbotham. “I have no doubt his guidance and experience will result in future diving Olympians from our proud community.”

The Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center is a nonprofit center featuring a 50-meter competition pool, a 17.5-foot deep diving well, tennis courts and fitness room. More information on programming can be found at http://www.mybsac.org/.
