Colwill's Chance for Olympic Medal Dashed

The Brandon native will not advance to the finals in the men's 3m springboard.

A misstep on the diving board has cost Chris Colwill his chance for an Olympic medal.

During the semifinals of the men’s 3m springboard Aug. 7, Colwill saw his hopes dashed after performing a lackluster fifth dive followed by a sixth and final dive in which he accidentally bounced down on the edge of the board, throwing off his dive and earning him 0 points.

“It’s not the way I wanted it to end,” Colwill said to his coach, Dan Laak, following the fatal dive.

Hugging the 27-year-old Brandon native, Laak told him, “Well, you’re a classy diver. You’ve had a helluva career. Not everybody can say that.”

That final dive put Colwill in 18th place, meaning he will not advance to the finals.
