The Brandon Sports and Aquatics Center, 405 Beverly Blvd., Brandon, is hosting the Hillsborough County Special Olympics Swimming Competition on Saturday, July 14 at 10:30 a.m.

The event will feature dozens of Special Olympics athletes from across Hillsborough County competing in both long and short course events. The Special Olympic athletes have been training since late May to be ready for the event.

This will be the first time in several years that BSAC will have athletes who train at its facility participating in the Special Olympics swimming competition.

Several BSAC Blue Wave Swim Team members helped establish the new Team TRIDENT Special Olympics Swim Team, which has 10 team members competing at this weekend’s event. Blue Wave swimmer Kinsey Smith led the creation of the new team as part of a Gold Award Project for the Girl Scouts of America.

The Team TRIDENT Program is BSAC’s day and after-school program serving people with intellectual disabilities. It is designed to create an active recreation environment for the participants.

BSAC Executive Director Chuck Burgess is excited to host the Special Olympics event.

“We are extremely excited to be a part of this event for Special Olympics,” said Burgess. “I know our Team TRIDENT program can’t wait to compete against all of the inspirational individuals that will be here this weekend.”
