2013 Football: Newsome and Durant Lose, Riverview Wins, Bloomingdale Waits

Local teams played Thursday night football this week, except for the Bulls, who had a bye.

The Newsome High School Wolves dropped their first game of the season while the Riverview Sharks scored a victory against the Brandon Eagles in Thursday night play. The Bloomingdale Bulls had a bye and Durant scored its third loss of the season.

The Wolves lost at Sickles High School, in a 27-7 contest against the Gryphons. "The Wolves’ only touchdown came after a Gryphon reserve threw an interception," according to game coverage posted at Tampa Bay Times.

The Wolves (2-1 overall and 0-0 in district play) beat Tampa Bay Tech (23-12) on Aug. 30 and Gaither (38-7) a week later. Sickles is 3-0 this season, with wins against Robinson (35-14), Durant (28-0) and Newsome.

Closer to home, the Riverview Sharks handed the Brandon Eagles their second loss of the season. 

"Hard-fought game but a heartbreaker of a loss to Riverview, 28-21," reads the Facebook notice at Brandon Eagles Football. "Heads-up guys, the fans will support the team," reads a posted comment.

The game, whose start was delayed because of rain, featured quarterback Keisean Young running for three first-half scores for the Sharks, according to game coverage posted at Tampa Bay Times online.  Young, a junior, reportedly "led with a game-high 209 yards on 20 carries."

The Sharks are 2-1 overall, having beaten Leto (56-0) on Aug. 23 and losing to East Bay a week later (26-20). The Eagles (1-2) beat Blake (18-6) on Aug. 30 and lost to Bloomingdale (21-0) a week later.

Bloomingdale had a bye this week. The Bulls, with wins against Strawberry Crest (23-12) and Brandon (21-0), next face Plant, at Plant, on Sept. 20.

As for last year's undefeated Durant Cougars, in regular season play, their losing streak continues this season with a 31-10 loss against Tampa Bay Tech on Sept. 12. The Cougars lost to Armwood on Aug. 30 (48-6) and to Sickles a week later (28-0).
