No More Neti Pot For Me!

Blogger Sharon Summerall weighs the risks of using a neti pot in light of two recent deaths attributed to the possible use of the popular pots.

In my last blog, I shared with the readers that I had heard about the health benefits of the Neti Pot and decided to give it an earnest try. If you aren't familiar with a neti pot, it is a small pot ( it looks like a little tea pot,) in which you add warm water and salt to irrigate your sinuses. This is touted as a home remedy for colds, allergies and sinus trouble.

I have been using the Neti Pot faithfuly since that blog post in hopes that I could report back some miraculous health benefits from using it.

Imagine my surprise when last night I was watching the news and one of the headlines was that two people had died from possibly using a neti pot!

It seems in Lousisana there have been two deaths possibly attributed to using a neti pot with tap water and not distilled or boiled water per the instructions that come with the pots. The news reported that both people had died from a brain-eating amoeba....Yikes!

There are new warnings out that if you are going to use a neti pot; use distilled or boiled water and not tap water.

Somehow I didn't see the part in the instructions that said to use distilled or boiled water and I have been using tap water, too.

I have decided that the prospect of death by a brain-eating amoeba is enough to stop using the neti pot. How about you?
