The Durant High School 11th-grader was named the 2012 Sunshine State Scholar for Hillsborough County.
Whiz Kid: Jacob Bernier, an 11th-grader at Durant High School
Accomplishment: Bernier was named the 2012 Sunshine State Scholar for Hillsborough County. He was nominated by the teachers at Durant to represent the school for the county. They chose one student for each county, for a total of 67 to represent the state. He will attend a conference in Orlando in February to receive his award.
Details: Bernier is co-vice president of Mu Alpha Theta, a member of the science team and Spanish Honor Society, and is currently taking five advanced placement courses. He also is No. 1 academically in his junior class. At the beginning of the school year, his GPA was 5.44. Bernier, a resident of Buckhorn Preserve, is the son of Greg and Shawn Bernier.
