FishHawk Math Team Keeps Adding Up its Wins

The fourth-grade Math Bowl Team took first place in district competition.

This group of FishHawk Creek Elementary School fourth-graders never groan about staying after school to work on complicated algebra equations.

For the members of the school's fourth-grade Math Bowl Team, numbers are a sport.

The team made up of students Jack McNally, Joey Riley, Emma Tamayo and George Wilson has been together since the second grade.

"You are chosen to be on the Math Bowl Team and you have to stay after school once a week for an hour to practice," explained team member Jack McNally.

"We work together as a team, answering questions as fast and as thoroughly as well can," added teammate George Wilson.

Their coach, math teacher Sharon Marshall, said it's their teamwork and mutual love of math that led the team to take first place this year at the 2013 District Math Bowl Competition.

"They have quite an achievement record," said Marshall.

As second-graders, the team earned a second place in district competition. In third grade, the team tied for first place. And this year, the FishHawk Creek mathletes swept the competition, beating out 20 other schools.

"Individually, they each have wonderful math skills and are very passionate about math," said Marshall. "But they are great as a team."
