Fast Facts About Hillsborough County Schools

As the new school year gets under way, here's some interesting facts about the Hillsborough County School District.

  • Hillsborough County schools depend on 1,000 buses to transport 91,000 students each school day.
  • 193,757 students are enrolled in Hillsborough County schools
  • More than 700 new teachers were hired for this school year.
  • The district employs 10,924 teachers
  • 97 Hillsborough County schools have a mandatory uniform policy
  • At 131 percent, Turner Elementary School in Tampa is at the highest capacity. At 45 percent, Franklin Magnet Middle School in Tampa is at the lowest capacity.
  • 76 schools received an A grade in 2012
  • 24 schools received a D or F grade in 2012
  • Both the number and percentage of students earning a 3 or higher on Advanced Placement exams increased by more than 10 percent from 2011 to 2012. The percentage of students earning a 3 or higher increased from 38 percent to 42 percent and the number of students taking the AP exams increased from 32,050 to 32,796.
  • For the first time since the Challenge Index was created, 100 percent of the district’s regular high schools, as well as Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate Charter High School, were listed on the 2012 Washington Post High School Challenge (formerly Newsweek’s America’s Best High Schools).
